so i just bought this board. pretty nice board it seems. i was reading the manual and it says that the 4x slot on there is a universal slot that can fit a 16x card. and sure enough you look at it and one side is open ended, and you can fit a x16 pci-e card in there (just not all the pins touch).

does this leave open the possibility of modding the a8n-e into a sli board? has anyone used this slot for a 2nd video card?

I found this post interesting as I recently purchased an Asus A8N-SLI board for my new system build and am curious if one can do SLI the way you suggest on the non-SLI A8N-E. I bet that the answer is "no". Just a guess.

yeah im thinking that too, i figure the slot can be used at least for a 2nd card for more monitors. but it is an intersting possibility. the layout of the board is pretty similar to the a8n-sli so who knows.

then again before nvidia started locking out the sli drivers to nforce sli only , there were xeon motherboards with one x16 and one x4 slot that could run sli. it would be interesting anyway. i guess the manual says it is a slot with 1 gb/sec bandwidth though it looks like a 4x slot. i guess that means its a x2 bandwidth slot, since there are 2 x1 slots and x16 and nf4ultra only has 20x lanes.

Evidently it can be modded to an SLI board by clipping or soldering something on the chipset. You still have to find an SLI bridge, though, so I'd recommend getting the -SLI right from the start if you want that feature (maybe I'm just skittish about taking a soldering iron and wire cutters to a brand new something that I just paid $130 for).

Sure... Here is the thread from another site, if you're interested to know more. :)
