IMO, Oblivion and G3 are rather comparable " Fantasy action adventure" game with "RPG elements"
--unlike NWN2 which is a strict D&D dice-based RPG game with top down camera (and bugs galore)

Oblivion has prettier Gfx and runs better ... i put 1,200 hours into that game - the first player to report over 1,000 hours
:Q

So far, G3 has better combat than Oblivion ... can't say about the Quests yet. Some Oblivion quests are generic/boring ... others keep you on the edge of your seat - they are that good [think Dark Brotherhood and the MQ]

DM M&M is another awesome game - but it even "less RPG" ... more like Thief without the mandatory "sneak" [closer to Thief - DS where you could use mele]

stay tuned for more ... i got 4 days off starting this afternoon

:D

Alright! :)

What class did you play in Oblivion Apoppin? And did you play vanilla, no mods?

Maxx was a custom class - 'adventurer'

he maxed all his abilities at Level 93 ... without cheats or the console

the first 1,000 hours were played without mods ... just the official plugins except Spell Tomes... the next over 200 hours were spent exploring the user-made mods

i will probably take a 'break' from my newer games to play the Oblivion Xpack in 12 days
[or i may wait till i get my x1950p] ;)

lvl 93 :Q
just hit lvl 2 with my Nord scout, Goresplash! woo!

What plugins?! Eh? Where, how? EDIT: ohh, those plugins. The new dungeon ones sound cool.

by xpac you mean knights of the nine?

yes ... Knights of the Nine is supposed to be $9.99 at CurseitCity on release ... it includes all the plugins i paid for. :p
[Mehrunes Razor and the FC Spire were my favourites]

... and you need the 'jail exploit' to get beyond the usual 'level 50, or so'.
[you lose skills in jail ... then can go another level when you are out] ;)

edit:
how'd this turn into an Oblivion discussion?
:Q

still my favourite game of this century ... so far

Also, does the US version have any blood/gore censorship?

G3 runs wonderfully ...

compared to ANY new game i bought this month on my system:

1) NWN2 [buggy as hell]
2) FEAR's Xpack [surprisingly buggy and worse performance than the original]
3) DM M&M ["slightly" buggy]

since everything is 'med', i doubt that it is really taxing ... i imagine turning up textures, reflections or shadows would kill performance on my mid-range system ... with 1GB, you can see "hesitation" as it loads ... but nothing 'irritating'
[i DO plan to upgrade to 1.5GB system RAM after my x1950p and hopefully a RAM price drop, next year]

no censorship i can see. ... you need to 'execute' your enemies [*SPLAT*] if you don't want to face them later
[i wondered why they were shooting at me after i left them for dead] :p
:Q

i won't have any friends in OrcVille
:brokenheart:

PS. Liberating or killing 3 towns of any type will make you permanently at war with that faction and not able to do any more of their quests. Choose wisely who you make enemies with.

i actually plan to play it a couple of times and a couple of completely different ways

right now ... i'm all Rebel -- kill every Orc on sight

[yep, i can see a 'twist' coming [at least that is the way i'd write it], but that is the way i want to play it ;)

and i am OFF to work...
the earlier i get there, the sooner i can get back [1/2 day] and start playing ...
i am the one 'stuck' making the Turkey feast tomorrow. :p

[did you know that unsweetened cranberry juice tenderizes turkey meat? ... i created this basting recipie independently of research that turned out unbelievably awesomly delicious ... so now i am stuck making it every year ... twice a year]

Apoppin:Gothic 2 is worth buying too, check the price here .You'll be able to max out all the settings in that game.

My favourite Gothic game was the very first Gothic (even with awarkard controls)then Gothic 2 ,followed by Gothic 3.

I love Gothic 3 so far but it has crashed on me every single way possible so I'm waiting for a couple more patches before spending more time on it.

my "issue" on exit was my impatience :p

if i wait about 1-2 minutes, it will exit normally

the game is awesome ... played it a few more hours last night ... exchanged companions [don't let your rebel companion 'go' in an Orc camp ... outside is more wise if you want to use him again] and went bandit hunting ... cleared a Goblin/Troll cave [they are tough but stupid ... use arrows] and starting to piece a bit of a story together as i quest for everyone [new strategy: the orcs are getting it outside their cities ... no living witnesses ... and NH is getting the hang of the altars].

it keeps getting better and better!
:Q

[still no major issues] :)

Excuse me and my enthusiasm!

it's BETTER than Oblivion.
:Q

and much more challenging --especially if you want to risk going off the "beaten path"

i am at a pretty low level [i seriously doubt i have 8 hours into it] but have already faced 2 DRAGONS ... without massive weaponry [like hard hitting arrows]. the NH is no match ... so he gets to STEAL their treasure by sneaking ... well, i got 2K gold in a few minutes to buy a little armour plus lots of goodies ... exploring that cave further was "no go" , so i get to come back with the better lock picks and really clean it out.

i went for a [long] swim ... as i was looting a party of skeletons that met a horrible fate, the NH was ambushed by probably the same 2 Gargoyles ... fortunately they don't swim and he got away clean. :p

and saw what looks like T-rex and King Kong

so i snuck by

... i got to see a temple i will revisit later ... and realize i better get back to the beaten path ... wiser and richer for having ventured.

this game is massive ... almost on Oblivion's scale

and the gfx -- even at med - are totally immersive with few hitches [except where the scenery gets dense and you are mobbed].

thanks ... i guess i am WAY over my head

i killed a couple of cave trolls in a cave infested with goblins ... really stupid critters ... arrows did the trick ... but i ran out of arrows for the Dragons ... not to mention the Giant Trolls :p

do they come usually in pairs? ... or does it get worse?

Superb variety on the enemy monsters ... far better than Oblivions

... and should i get back to the Story and progress a bit further or continue 'exploring'?

.....................

as to the patch ... my 'thing' is, if it is working, DON'T patch it ... i haven't even fiddled with the settings
[i'll do that when it is patched and i have my x1950p]

Some in groups, others on their own. Wait until you get to the desert and snow areas, that has some really fun exploring :).

How is Gothic 3's combat? I keep seeing bad interface and poor combat in reviews and discussions. I started loving Gothic 2's after a while. Still not sure if I'll get it or not though, way too many bad reviews; then again, didn't stop me from buying the last one.

First of all, i really liked Oblivion's combat ... button-mashing fest though it is ... :p

G3's seems a bit deeper and i like it better ;)

you don't always 'connect' though
[i guess there is some 'd&d luck' involved]
:Q

and 'god help you' if you need to drink a healing potion during the fight ... there is some time involved and you keep getting whacked [unlike Oblivion] --which to me is more 'realistic' in G3 ... strangely if you just run away, the Enemy NPCs don't follow very long or very far [as in Oblivion where they are tenacious] ... so you get to regroup

Swinging a sword and parrying seems quite 'natural' and very effective on enemies who have different attacks and weaknesses ... i am just getting the hang of the shield and also the use of the crossbow vs the bow and the different swords ... but it is very intuitive

so ... combat is great ... i am working on my sneak/mele ... not so much magic yet

and i am heading back .... for more abuse

:D

***SPOILERS***

Oblivion is kinda meh tbh. Zombies are way too tough, goblins are wicked easy, being able to journey into "oblivion" through the gates at Kvatch is really really lame. Those guards are 10 times tougher than I am at lvl 3.

Should have started the game with OOO installed, for less stupidity like that.

Any advice to offer me Apoppin? I so don't want to start over, but will if I have to, i think. Maybe i'll just pretend i'm not able to go through the gate and just continue with "lesser" quests til I feel stronger, strong enough to enter the portal.

For oblivion? :p

i forgot most of the game
:Q

well ... almost

just drop off the MQ and head off to join a guild ... which ever you desire ... Mages, Fighters, Thieves or Dark Brotherhood. ... or ALL of 'em ... Fight in the Arena to get mele [if you desire] ... THEN head back to help Martin.

and read the lore books along the way ... especially 'the REAL Berezeniah [sp.]' ... because it sets the stage for the Great Story of YOU ... the Hero of Cyrodiil [and why they will wait for you] ;)

that or just move the difficulty slider to the right :p

:D

and/or get "chameleon" 101% for complete invincibility [if you want godmode]

happy exploring!

BACK to the TOPIC ...

G3 does still have some bugs ... sometimes you try to change weapons and you just get eaten .... [a reload solves that] ... fighting is fine ... mostly movement coupled with long-short clicks of the r-l mouse do anything you want [generally]

it reminds me of Oblivion before patch 1 ... i dropped the vegetation to 'Low' for better FPS [it gets in the way anyway]

... and i got up at 6am ... not to score cheap Black Friday stuff ... but to play this damn game
:shoocked;

i am 'hooked'

it is somewhat frustrating as you usually have EITHER Skill points OR Gold [that is it's point] ... and finally i got my NH some fair armour [he's been fighting in his street clothes up-till-now] so he can take some damage ... he dishes a LOT out for his level ... he is mostly mele

BTW, i find it hard to change arrows effectively ... suggestions?

When you have the money and right skill points(arcane magic at 50 plus and 75 rating for rebel) go for Paladin armour(best you can buy). You will get a lot of money in this game but it does take time.

As to arrows I just use 2 or 3 toolbar icons at the bottom, for example stick normal arrows in number 4 toolbar icon ,fire arrows for number 5 box etc.... if I want to use fire arrows I just hit number 5 on the keyboard,if I decide to use normal arrows then I just hit number 4 again.

thanks ...arrows ... too simple

i was enabling the bow/crossbow again

where's a good place for 'tips'?
the manual [unlike NWN2's] is pretty 'minimal'

finally ... when they say Grain is North of the village ... how far north? i found the grain thieves ... not the farm :(
[perhaps i should travel by Daylight]:light:
:Q

:D

heading back ... soon ... with some "real" arrows :p
