[actually stuttering isn't bad ... compared with HL2 ... happens especially when you change levels or 'save']
it also suffers from fairly long load times at the levels
[ok. i am REALLY spoiled by Oblivion]
it's pretty linear isn't it?
Or can you just ignore the storyline for awhile and go off exploring?
and do i need to stop and do the skill points every time it is available? ... can i do a bunch at once when i see where it is going?
Finally is it better to specialize or be a jack-of-all-trades?
What are you trying to download? (did I miss it in the thread?)
And you'll want the 1.01 patch if you don't already have it. It really does help.
There is also things like no-cd/dvd if you don't like putting in your dvd every time you want to start the game.
New 1.01 no-dvd just came out
It might help with some studdering if it checks the dvd.
Yes, it's like HL2 (you have a few choices but it basically all lead to the same 4 endings depending on what you do (I won't spoil it for you, but if you want to know, PM me

)
Anyway, there's no exploring, no buying things, no nothing like Oblivion. They are just two different types of games. However, they are both really fun, just in a different way.
Also, check out the
Dark Messiah Tweak Guide, it may have a few tweaks to get performance a little better, but the load times will stay the same. You might want to especially check out the advanced tweaks because of settings a heapsize, and setting cl_smooth to 0, etc... can all reduce stuttering (read about it)
And I would advise to build up a couple skill points, then spend them. (some of the later upgrades take a few skill points (by a few, I mean like 6+ if i remember right). But you gain them pretty fast. I like to sort of concentrate more on brute strength and combat (thats just me) but if you like magic you can focus on that too.
In the beginning you might be able to spend some of the skill points at once, but some of the later levels might take a few more then 1 or 2 skill points as I have said. (I sometimes forgot about them so I just play till I realize that I got them and use them

)
And favorite weapon in the game is the daggers. Small, light, and fast. I think they are by far the best weapon in the game (especially some of the more powerful and magic ones, they do like +6 damage, or +4 damage+lightning junk.
