The 3 pin on board fan power supplies quit working? Is there anyway to correct it?

The main board is a Abit BX-133 raid.

I just recently bought a 7000rpm fan (galaxy g12 heat sink). At first it would only work in the second fan position (not in the CPU fan position). The HW doctor started to report on and off readings jumping from 7000+ to 3000+ to OFF. then a few days later it was always off. I removed the case and tried both pin positions again but nothing worked. I tried the old CPU fan (Golden orb) and it wouldn't work either. I plugged the 7000 rpm fan into the 3rd fan position (down by ISA slot) and it would run but not as fast as it did in the upper 3 pin positions. The old CPU fan would run in this position also, but there is no rpm reading for this position even though it is a three pin connection.

Any ideas? :Q

Well, you most likely burnt out your fan headers. When your speed was jumping all over the place, it should have been a clue something was wrong. The fan headers on the motherboard can only supply so much power. It has been said many times that you should NOT plug a high RPM fan into your motherboard fan headers. Get a 3pin to 4pin connector so the fan draws power directly from the power supply.

Yep, what fenrir said....mobo headers on older boards weren't built for the high rpm/cfm screamers that today's cooling solutions require. I have my 80mm Delta on my Pal8045 plugged into my mobo b/c its a newer board, but I might get a molex converter just in case. Its not uncommon for the headers to burn out.

Thanks guys, Sounds like your right!

Funny thing is that if I plug in the older cooler (golden orb) it will run for a few minutes then just die out. I did make a home made power converter but left the rpm lead intact in hope to get at lease the rpm from the sucker, but it too only works for about a minute then dies off. Oh well, I will be makeing a new system soon enough to say, "live and learn" with that ol' board.

Thanks again!
