Hatchbacks, particularly four door hatchbacks, do not sell well in the US. It is an American thing.

I don't think you know what you're talking about. Hatchbacks are big in NA. Honda got out of it for a few years, and others stepped in like Mazda, Toyota, and even Ford, and scooped up the market. Which is why they came back in 2002 with hatchbacks again.
