Finally placed my order , after shipping I just barely broke $2000... came to $2014. So, close enough.
Happy V-day to me haha!
After debating for many months, much advise from these forums, here is what I finally went with ( I didn't bother to list all the "minor" stuff like DVD/RW, OS, surge protector etc... )
This rig gives me good option I think to SLI or OC in the future should I feel like it.
Case: 100159 - NO PS - Antec Performance One P160 ATX Mi
Power Supply: 100338 - PS 500W - Enermax Liberty ELT500AWT ATX 2
Motherboard: 110704 - Asus A8N-SLI Premium nForce4 SLI Audio/GB
- This was probably the TOUGHEST choice. I was so close to going with the DFI Ultra D but, too many problem stories. Best I can fathom, this mobo works great except the bios is easy to break if your not very careful. Perhaps has some rare incompatibilites with certain setups. The SLI Premium is perhaps more than I needed to spend, but overall I read the best things about this board, and a guy who builds gaming rigs here at work said he loves it, I trust his judgement and just finally said , screw it ill spend an extra 50$ here. I might of gone with the Epox board but monarch doesnt offer it. OH well.
Processor: 120241 - AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Dual-Core 1MB
- Going Dual-core vs single core something else I long debated. But with the recent drops in this speed range, PLUS they now come with a sweet heatsink... I am very happy with this choice. Yes... many here recommended the opteron...which also was tempting, but once again.. happy with my choice.
Memory: 140226 - DDR (400) 3200 - 2 GB (2 pcs 1GB) OCZ DDRPlatnium
-Awesome reviews on the OCZ - I believe this was editors choice here at annandtech and, surprisingly came to $215 for 2 gig of this. did price drop? I had to jump on this.
Hard Drive: 150352 - SATA3G - Western Digital Caviar SE 160 GB
- Big Western Digital fan, I didnt want to bother with the Raptor....160gb plenty for me, easy to add another Drive down the line!
Sound Card: 180427 - Creative Labs X-Fi Platinum 7.1 24-Bit So
Video Card: 190465 - eVGA GeForce 7800 GT 256MB DDR3/PCI-E/VIV
-While my experience with ATI has been ok, my experience with Nvidia has been so much better. And go go with NVIDIA this card has the best value IMO. No matter what card I get, ill be upgrading at some point.
All for under $2k, aside from bargain hunting around the net and building myself ( ugh ) I think I did good. They only charge $75 build fee and its all warranty. Id still like to build one myself for fun if I strike it Rich 🙂
AAAHHH AT LAST. I cant friggin wait to mindlessly blow crap up in F.E.A.R, Q4 in maxed setting glory. And, needless to say IM ready for Oblivion! buwhahaa.
Now I need to suffer the wait for it to arrive.
I will let you all know how it works when I get it. I'm sure there are plenty opinions on my choices ( the motherboard ended up in quite the debate here ) but regardless thanks a TON for all the advice here. I learned alot, things have changed QUITE a bit since my I bought my last rig ( AMD 1.4 thunderbird! hahaha! )
