The $2000 PC Take 3 ( finale )

Finally placed my order , after shipping I just barely broke $2000... came to $2014. So, close enough.

Happy V-day to me haha!

After debating for many months, much advise from these forums, here is what I finally went with ( I didn't bother to list all the "minor" stuff like DVD/RW, OS, surge protector etc... )

This rig gives me good option I think to SLI or OC in the future should I feel like it.

Case: 100159 - NO PS - Antec Performance One P160 ATX Mi

Power Supply: 100338 - PS 500W - Enermax Liberty ELT500AWT ATX 2

Motherboard: 110704 - Asus A8N-SLI Premium nForce4 SLI Audio/GB
- This was probably the TOUGHEST choice. I was so close to going with the DFI Ultra D but, too many problem stories. Best I can fathom, this mobo works great except the bios is easy to break if your not very careful. Perhaps has some rare incompatibilites with certain setups. The SLI Premium is perhaps more than I needed to spend, but overall I read the best things about this board, and a guy who builds gaming rigs here at work said he loves it, I trust his judgement and just finally said , screw it ill spend an extra 50$ here. I might of gone with the Epox board but monarch doesnt offer it. OH well.

Processor: 120241 - AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Dual-Core 1MB
- Going Dual-core vs single core something else I long debated. But with the recent drops in this speed range, PLUS they now come with a sweet heatsink... I am very happy with this choice. Yes... many here recommended the opteron...which also was tempting, but once again.. happy with my choice.

Memory: 140226 - DDR (400) 3200 - 2 GB (2 pcs 1GB) OCZ DDRPlatnium
-Awesome reviews on the OCZ - I believe this was editors choice here at annandtech and, surprisingly came to $215 for 2 gig of this. did price drop? I had to jump on this.

Hard Drive: 150352 - SATA3G - Western Digital Caviar SE 160 GB
- Big Western Digital fan, I didnt want to bother with the Raptor....160gb plenty for me, easy to add another Drive down the line!
Sound Card: 180427 - Creative Labs X-Fi Platinum 7.1 24-Bit So
Video Card: 190465 - eVGA GeForce 7800 GT 256MB DDR3/PCI-E/VIV
-While my experience with ATI has been ok, my experience with Nvidia has been so much better. And go go with NVIDIA this card has the best value IMO. No matter what card I get, ill be upgrading at some point.

All for under $2k, aside from bargain hunting around the net and building myself ( ugh ) I think I did good. They only charge $75 build fee and its all warranty. Id still like to build one myself for fun if I strike it Rich 🙂

AAAHHH AT LAST. I cant friggin wait to mindlessly blow crap up in F.E.A.R, Q4 in maxed setting glory. And, needless to say IM ready for Oblivion! buwhahaa.

Now I need to suffer the wait for it to arrive.

I will let you all know how it works when I get it. I'm sure there are plenty opinions on my choices ( the motherboard ended up in quite the debate here ) but regardless thanks a TON for all the advice here. I learned alot, things have changed QUITE a bit since my I bought my last rig ( AMD 1.4 thunderbird! hahaha! )

great rig bud, good job...

great job... proud of you, someone that actually listens to us

someone give this kid a medal he did it right on the ifrst shot.

haha i'm just kidding, you'd be surprised what some people post , totally inconsistent

that is a perfect build for the amount of money you had...

And I hate to say it, but for fear, ATi x19xx series wins.. because they have more pixel pipelines.. And this is coming from an nVidia fanboy

Believe me I priced many configurations the ATI, and to pass it up wasn't easy.

I have been overall, happy with my ATI 9800 pro but.. had a few games that had big driver problems with it. Always switching my damn catalyst drivers around... they run hot... just not going to go with ATI again. Sorry!

My old geforce Ti300 was the best damn card I ever had, lasted me forever AND I finally sold it to someone for like $45 2 years laster.

Nvidia all the way

Yeah well I gave myx1800xt plus my lanparty rdx200 away.. so You can imagine my feelings about the pos mobo and a sad video card.

My big bone to pick with dfi is how everyone has post issues yet they have these trolsl on the board that claim they know "lots of people" who have it and it "runs great" just an attempt to suppress an internal error IMHO

What? Everyone has post issues with DFI? Not true at all, DFI is a great overclocking board.

Stability and features... this board can do it all.

That's all it is. Too frequently have people placed it over the a8n sli or a8nsli32.

It may be a great O/C board but other than that my friend it sucks. Post issues up the a$$

Read the threads about how people's stuff won't post, it's a DFI, i even found out veggz was.

DOn't defend DFi when their quality is lacking severely because of the 165 users keeping them out of the "moderate selling" pool and putting them into the "blang blang in taiwan we drivin ferrari pickin up chix" category

Oh, I'm sorry that opteron 165 users are experiencing 2.7Ghz at STOCK voltage (and it is ROCK STABLE) and not spending $630 for an X2 4800. If you can't understand the board, the concept and the ratios you shouldn't be playing with it- hence having errors.

I'd pick it over the a8n sli any day.

It has nothing to do with chicks or taiwan, just with spending extra on important things like transistors which will allow for higher quality voltage control.

No, you don't understand. The opteron users like YOU are being biased towards asus who's a8nsli32 proved it's just as good, and therefore you're helping them play rap music wear gold chains and pick up chix with their blang blang...

And since WHEN did I say I overclocked it? These are POST errors when you install the damn thing, and trust me, it's not user error, either DFI fixes it or I'm going to find you AEG Dfi guys and get you banned. I have the time believe me.

If you don't know what you're doing then DFI is easy to cock up, and considering the depth of knowledge you show on occasion you fall into that pit rather easily.

AEG DFI Guys? Get us banned? What?
Who is playing rap music and waering gold chains to pick up chix with blang blang?

If you want to talk hardware, talk hardware. DFI is number one for stability. There is a time and a place for feature rich stock boards, I own an ASUS A8N Premium board, it is a great board for my girlfriend who wants to have a nice stock system.

EDIT: Actually, speaking of... we had to RMA the board once to newegg because it didn't work when it arrived.

QFT.

ok, lets get this straight. DFI was indie when it first came into the scene.
TBH DFI was always an overclocking board but their popularity has just skyrocketed since everyone is like Oh EM GEE opteron..
Now then people are like YO GET THE DFI DAWG DFI ROX. So everyone get's a DFI Lanparty. Now look what you guys have done
You guys have givne DFI such a rep that they get away doing crap work on alot of their boards that they're puttig out and have post errors.. And look with all that money you give em to overclock your so called l33t opt3ron you allow them to roll around in ferrari's in Taiwan picking up chix pretending they're master P.

The result is a lack of attention to what they onc ewere, reliable boards. They are not. Check out every person o nthis board when their mobo has a post error, wth board do they have? they have a d f I.

Thx alot to you Foodfightr, people like you support dfi so fanatically that they get away with shafting people like me and veggz and numerous other peole.

Lack of knowledge whe nI ask about scsi drives or fitments of a case only one other person has on this board? Naga please man.

RAM thread? Dude 4gb is properly used by x64.
Oh wait you thought I had win xp 32bi... bob skipping half the thread again ftw.. stop being a post wh0re

We could debate it there, but since you don't want your face rubbed in your own stupidity i doubt you'll bother.

Face rubbed in by stupidity? Who's the noob that got ownt in the other thread and proceeded to troll other threads? S T F U.

Seriously, you come on these boards trolling all day you damn 16 year old, get a damn job.

So called l33t opt3rons? Opteron is a server line of an AMD chip. If you're having problems with a board on stock settings you need to RMA it or test your ram, power supply, etc.

As for brands changing? It happens all of the time... AMD when from an Intel knock off to a viable competitor. DFI changed to be an enthusiast board.

So if DFI sells like crazy, just by sheer numbers alone some are going to have a problem with thier hardware and that applies no matter what motherboard you're talking about.

If you want to get a motherboard meant for tuning and tweaking and you don't know what you're doing you'll have problems- simple as that.

Actually when you use 4x1GB your ram will slow down from CAS1 to CAS2 resulting in a performance decrease.

about 5 percent. but i'm sure you didn't read that

Going from t1 to t2 timings, the loss is minimal

2700 Mhz * 5% = 135Mhz

... Per core....

So thats 270 Mhz, or more than 1/4 of a GHZ. Sounds like a pretty big hit to me.
