The 15,000 mile oil change...

So Mobil 1 Extended Performance says it lasts 15,000 miles. Is this true?

Either way, I'd like to do an oil change every 10k miles, or 1 year, whichever is first. Normally, I've been using the Purolator PureOne oil filters. Should I get some kind of super duper oil filter if I expect to use Mobil 1 for 10k to 15k miles? The Mobil 1 filter seems pretty expensive... Marketing, or is it worth it?

Thanks 🙂

What does the service manual for your vehicle recommend for oil change intervals?

If you're only going to replace your oil filter once a year, what's an extra $5 for a better oil filter?

Whatever you decide to do, get a UOA done at Blackstone. That will tell you how your specific car is holding up and is well worth the money.

It all depends on where you live (weather, temperatures, etc), how you drive (highway, stuck in traffic, short runs, etc), and what your manual says. Some cars are prone to sludging (older cars), and can't run that long on the extended oils.

If you don't expose the car to severe driving conditions the 15,000 miles should be fine. Amsoil has a 25,000 mile oil, once a year oil.

Its funny that the local quickie oil change place near me puts stickers for the next change at 3000 miles.... they gotta be kidding me.

Either because 1) that's the way it used to be, or 2) they use really crappy oil that you shouldn't leave in there very long 😛

My OLM light usually kicks on at about 12k miles on my SUV. I drive it normally. My car is a little older and doesn't have that snazzy system, plus it gets driven a little more aggressively, isn't stock, and has a smaller pan (5 qts vs 7 qts), so it gets a change every 5-6k. I use mobil 1 in both.

Every since I have been driving I always go 10K plus on oil changes and I use regular oil. I have never had an issue on my cars

The interval could be quite possible if the oil is a Group 4 synthetic. The oil change interval on my old '08 M3 was 15k miles.

I am too OCD to let my engines go 15k miles even if the mfg tells me its ok.

Even the wifes minivan gets its every 5k. Hell that car gets driven harder than my infinity.

Has anyone done any analysis on 15k mile old oil? 5k is the absolute max I'll go. The stresses and heat cycling and moisture it may be subject to is good enough reason for me. Synthetic or not, I'm not leaving it my motor that long. It's a negligible cost considering the alternative.

Take a look at all the threads (elsewhere) about first oil change analysis. I'm not leaving that original oil in there for 1,500, let alone 15,000.

I'd do it on a naturally aspirated engine. I would also do a seafoam treatment before the change, and I'd get a high-quality oil filter one size bigger. I use 626 oil filters on my Miata because they're basically the same cost for a bigger filter that will work well for longer.

I did 10k on Mobil 1 Extended 15k stuff, also sent that off to Blackstone last year and came back pretty good. Coming up on 12k miles now, so I'll change it, do it again and next year I'll send that sample off and see.

My location, Austin, Tx Ford F-150 4.6L

If you want to go a year or 15K or more, use Amsoil.
Amsoil is a stellar product... Put it in your gearbox while you're at it. The stuff rocks.

I'm thinking 10k or a year, whichever happens first, on an oversized Purolator PureOne filter. Same filter as the stock size, except it's just a little bit longer, so it has a bit more volume and more filter media. I forgot the numbers off hand, but it's actually the same filter I use for my Miata. Does this sound reasonable?

I use Mobil 1 0W-40 in my cars, and will typically go 15k between changes. I have not had any issues doing this.

5 qts of Mobil 1 is $23 at Walmart so why go further than 5K miles? It's not costly or hard to do. I always use OEM filters for any brand car I own. I use to run Amsoil for years but it's hard to justify the added hassle and expense. Most engines outlast the cars if well maintained, even with regular oils, normal intervals.

I beat the crap out of my engines, so I don't go that long, and I live in a hot dusty climate.

If your a spirited driver dont get near 10k. Its asking for trouble. Oil is so cheap and serves such an important function.

If you want to ignore something dont change your cabin air filter.
