The 110,000,000,000$ gift to Afghanistan would provide 2,750,000 4 year degrees

4 year college degrees to 2,750,000 Americans. Assuming a 40K cost of a 4 year degree.

So we handed 110,000,000,000 dollars to Afghanistan to build roads and stuff it got squandered.

That money could have provided a 4 year degree to a lot of Americans and that is just a start.

I love it how people bellyache every-time someone mentions spending money to help our own folks with a tangible benefit. But no one seems to complain when we hand out 110,000,000,000 dollars to places like Afghanistan.

I wonder how much we could do here at home if we cut the wars and stop handing out trillions to all these countries. Yet no one seems to complain.

Your Democrat and Republican controlled congresses are responsible for this. Hold them accountable?

You can add to that the money we just gave to Pakistan, Iraq, Israel and just about every other country because we cannot have socialism (caring for our people).

You handed the money to American contractors who pocketed it and went home

Republicans say free higher education in America is unsustainable financially and they are right. So long as that money is allocated for welfare for other countries and more wars, there simply isn't enough for higher education here.

It is curious though... Education be damned, I'd dare say our roads need the work more than Afghanistan's.

Yeah but as soon as you toss out that kind of money toward the colleges, they jack up their tuition costs by another 25% and the next thing you know, your 2.75 million degrees now cost $145 billion. This is why the government should not be in the business of paying one single dime towards college, and why we shouldnt be speculating on how the government could better waste taxpayer money. It would be better if the Federal government didnt borrow and waste the money at all. Neither here nor in Afghanistan.

Education is a danger to Religions and the Republican party. Why do you hate God and Republicans? Why do you have to keep meddling in their affairs with facts and knowledge? You are probably evil. Your soul has been possessed by the devil. We'll pray for you to come around and denounce education when you're ready.

itt liberals tell us how much more important it is for middle-class white Susie to receive his B.A. in Feminist Theory than it is for poor brown people outside of our country to have roads or plumbing.

EDIT: And fwiw I obviously feel Afghanistan is a waste, the war and its people alike. It's a backwards hellhole that makes its already-backwards neighbors look amazing, a place where child rape is a celebrated part of life.

At the same time, we continue to graduate more and more students and guess what? We have a problem where students carry significant debts for degrees that provide them no real world benefits. Either case, we're throwing away money. Anyone with the drive to get into a good, public university can already do so and affordably.

Here's a hypothetical:

You are President and Lord Emperor of the United States and have recently happened upon a forgotten fund of one billion dollars to use in any way you please. You're feeling generous, and want to help the little people in some way. Two groups approach you.

One represents an American student group 30,000 strong, all of which are upper-middle class. Their parents make too much money to receive a free ride through undergrad, and so they have to take out loans instead. They will graduate with significant debt, and it may take them a couple decades to pay it down depending on how good they are at saving their money.

Another represents Sandistanabad, an impoverished war-stricken nation with minimal natural resources in the middle of a record-breaking drought. You can supply potable water, simple housing, and basic staple foods and ensure that 300,000 of their most vulnerable do not die.

Which group do you fund and why?

Not to worry. Your boy, the Trumpster, promises boots on the ground in Syria & carpet bombing of ISIS held territory so that the proud tradition of American Exceptionalism & spreading Democracy with the guns of the Neocons will continue.

Of course Afghanistan turned into a cock-up. It was an eyes wide shut Republican plan, remember?

I would do nothing that would encourage any group of people to continue living in a geographic area that should not be capable of supporting human life. If they moved to my fertile country, you could spend half on each group, or some other ratio or such combination.

Fair enough. What if you could pay to have them relocated to fix the situation instead? If you spend half on each group, however, the benefits will be split as well. E.g. 15,000 don't have to pay debts on their degree, but 150,000 still die.

If they stay there, they die anyway. At least if some of them move they don't die, and hopefully they become productive members of society.

I'm sure I'd be willing to pay a portion. Without a more solid understanding of economics it's hard to estimate a figure, but Canada just brought in 25,000 refugees from Syria at a total cost of just over 1 Billion over 6 years or something, which I think is hella cheap.

I bet that money can build a wall across Mexico and the change fix up a large part of our crumbling bridges/infrastructure in the US. It would provide jobs here in the US as well.

That is why I am strongly leaning toward Trump at this time. He thinks waste /fraud, bad trade deals, illegal immigration are some of this countrys main problems, whereas, Clinton/Sanders seem to think Wall Street,Fetuses, and Cops are bigger problems

Sanders says that waste and fraud, bad trade deals, and a few other related issues are major problems, but that none of them will end as long as our politicians are owned by Wallstreet. If you want to tackle those issues you have to first tackle the issue of our government being run by corporations. Trump of course does not want to talk about that because he is literally the face of a corporation.

The immigration issue is somewhere that is in full disagreement. Sanders and his supporters simply do not see it as a major problem. We are a nation of immigrants, it has always been that way. The main problem with illegal immigration is that our immigration laws are too hard to navigate. Fewer immigrants would be illegal if we made it easier to be a legal immigrant.

But that is not what the Conservative crowed wants to hear because what they are really trying to say is that there are too many dark skinned people about and the liberal solution to illegal immigration does nothing to solve that.

On is the task of a nation the other is a theoretical task of the UN. Also for the second one ~<10% would actually reach those in need.

Unfortunately Sanders is DOA, the sheep are voting for clinton. So the only alternative is Trump.

We didn't give Afghanistan shit. We gave American contractors a ton of money to build subpar junk. US foreign aid is a joke for the most part and is simply a way to funnel money to US businesses.

These threads are great and show why nothing is going to change. Instead of blaming everyone who made this mess people blame the opposite party for wich they vote for. It's not a dem or republican issue. This is a politician being corrupt and no longer for the people.

As subyman said we didn't give the people of afghanastan shit. What they did is funnel that money into the hands of business's that paid politicans to do it. It wasn't one party that did it. it was both.

both continued the "war" and both voted for these contracts.
