Jesus?

Nice try, but we have records that show he lived...

I hate do dredge up the same debate, but, no, no we don't.

Did the Romans keep records of births? executions?

Yes, yes they did.

QFT. The Romans kept records of everything. I believe the Jewish authorities had records too...

You do realize that there is NO record of Jesus, right?

because superman, to me, isn't influential. niether are any superheroes.
batman, however, is a regular guy, who happens to be insanely rich, insanely clever, and insanely vigilantic.
he gives people inspiration to be at least one of those things, if not all three. :)

besides, batman is better anyhow. ;)

Josepheus: History of the Jewish War & Antiquities:
"About this time there lived [a man named] Jesus..." (18:63-64)

Cornelius Tacitus:
""Consequently, to get rid of the report, Nero fastened the guilt and inflicted the most exquisite tortures on a class hated for their abominations, called Christians by the populace. Christus, from whom the name had its origin, suffered the extreme penalty during the reign of Tiberious at the hands of one of our procurators, Pontius Pilatus, and a most mischievous superstition, thus checked for the moment, again broke out not only in Judea, the first source of the evil, but even in Rome, where all things hideous and shameful from every part of the world find their center and become popular. Accordingly, an arrest was first made of all who pleaded guilty; then upon their information, an immense multitude was convicted, not so much of the crime of firing the city, as of hatred against mankind. Mockery of every sort was added to their deaths, Covered with the skins of beasts, they were torn by dogs and perished, or were nailed to crosses, or were doomed to the flames and burnt, to serve as a nightly illumination, when daylight had expired. Nero offered his gardens for the spectacle, and was exhibiting a show in the circus, while he mingled with the people in the dress of charioteer or stood aloft on a car. Hence, even for criminals who deserved extreme and exemplary punishment, there arose a feeling of compassion; for it was not, as it seemed, for the public good, but to glut one man's cruelty, that they were being destroyed." (115 AD)

The James Ossuary:
James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus

Well, Josephus wasn't born till after Jesus supposedly died. C.T. Was born well after Jesus's death. The James Ossuarry - you are joking right?

Show me ONE account of Jesus that was written at ANY time during his life. There are none.

Did Jesus live? Maybe. But, there is no PROOF.

So just because something is written after someone dies, that person is no longer part of the historical record? You don't write about history as it's happening. Jesus lived in the armpit of the Roman empire. No one is going to write about him while he's alive. Only after his death forms a religion is anyone going to remotely care about him.

And in response to the James Ossuary, the IAA has been back and forth on it. "If authentic, it would have been the first archaeological proof that Jesus existed beyond the manuscript tradition." (BAR)

The IAA has never shown any proof that it's a forgery, and the Royal Ontario Museum, BAR, and Hershel Shanks all stand behind it's authenticity.

I recognize almost every name on this list, but I think "most influential" here is severely slanted towards Western culture. There's also some on the list who will be totally forgotten in ten years (Buffy the Vampire Slayer???) Lots of influential but currently little recognized names were left off, too.

I'd have god at the top. King Arthur and Big Brother are good ones, WTF Marlboro Man though...

he is a very succesful and long standing ad camaign, which ad people at marlboro likely can attribute a specific number of new and retained costomers to, meaning the marlboro man is responsible for the poor health, brochitis, lung cancer, heart disease, early deaths and poor wallets of many millions of people. Id say thats a hellofa lot more influence than some clown like george bush has had

Also, Bambi is a deer, not a person.

Dracula's character is based on a real person.

There were multiple St. Valentine's.

Ugghh, it just gets worse and worse. Steam engines being identified as people? WTF?

Well I'm impressed. Nice to see quality posts on P&N, with citations and everything!

Are you for real? Do you even realize what you are saying? And the Ossuary? Again, you have got to be kidding me.

Anyway, this is pointless, and I'm tired.
