Some of these intersections look poorly designed. If there was a truck or another large car in front of you and you had to make a left turn, you probally won't see the turn light in the center and it would be too late before you would know to stop.

#10 is like 1 mile from my apartment and I've never in the year and a half I've lived here seen an accident or even a close call there.

Roosevelt Boulevard in Philly is a poorly designed road in general. Each direction, there are TWO sets of 3-lane roads, separated by median. Why is this median there? That's right, to cause accidents when people need to move from the right side to the left. Turns are handled through mini-interesecting streets and mini-offramps. Its just plain terrible.

I wonder how they rate these, and rather than spending the time rating them, I wonder why they don't take steps to fix them so they're less dangerous.

The #8 one I've driven by many times, its right outside of a shopping mall, it never struck me as being that bad. Although 121 is interesting, its a highway with 60 mph speedlimits, but has stoplights. So I guess the combination of the highspeed highway with a hightraffic mall area makes the intersection bad. The second one on the Texas list is Midway & Beltline Road, one year there was 300 accidents in the year, when some other list came out a couple of years ago, a radio station camped out there all day to see if they would see an accident, hehe..

They do offer money to get the intersections studied. Check here.

"* The State Farm Danger Index is determined by the number of crashes at various intersections, how many of those crashes involved injury and the severity of those crashes. It is adjusted to account for the percentage of vehicles insured by State Farm in areas where the intersections are located."

And last time I knew, state farm wasn't in charge of fixing intersections :)

I go by #9 all the time when I'm up at school....while i could see how it'd be dangerous, i didn't think it was THAT bad. Well, at least they are doing a lot of construction on that road, so maybe it'll be better by the time i get back.

As quoted from state farms website...

State Farm, a longtime advocate of auto and highway safety, conducts these analyses to focus attention on a new way of evaluating intersection design by analyzing driver behavior and placing greater emphasis on safety-driven solutions to intersection problems. This year the company will make $5 million available to communities to study and, in some cases, make physical changes to enhance safety at specific intersections.
5th paragraph down, in some cases they pay to have changes made.

Yea, who designed thoes intersections?!?!
Some hick schmuck by the looks of the locations.

I believe the former site of Whitman's chocolates on Roosevelt Blvd is or will soon be zoned for commercial purposes.

This should put Grant Ave+ the blvd. easily into the #1 spot for worst intersection :|

wow, westheimer and 6 isn't listed for the first time in years...

this thing is loaded though, they don't normalize buy the amount of traffic an intersection sees. all these things are 6 and 8 lane streets intersecting. they have a higher volume of traffic so they see a higher number of accidents. plus state farm multiplies by some coefficient varying with the number of state farm policy holders in the area.

There's an intersection about 20 minutes from me that has 5 different directions converging in one crossing, with RR tracks going through 3 of those lanes right next to the main intersection. I drive around it.

The Roosevelt Boulevard intersections really are horrendous.

There are 12 lanes separated into groups of 3 by grass medians. There are 3 northbound "local" lanes, 3 northbound "express" lanes, and 3 each of the southbound variety.
There are "Crossovers" periodically to get from local to express lanes and vice versa. There are cross streets, lights, and high volume.

It is one of the most bizarre and dangerous roads I've ever seen. I used to drive it to work every day. When I first started, I was frazzled but I figured as I got used to it, I'd be less frightened by it.

I was wrong. You only get more and more shell-shocked everytime you do it.

There are some stupid fvcking people in this world. 121 and Preston (#8) is pretty wide open but you have to be completely unaware of your surroundings in order to get in an accident there.
