I've had issues with taking hours or simply not being able to fall asleep at night and then problems with waking up in the morning my whole life ... not quite the same problem you have, but sorta similar.
On nights when I'm going to need to fall asleep earlier than normal, or if I'm sick or have been not sleeping enough and am exhausted, I will take some Diphenhydramine (active ingredient out of Benedryl) to help me fall asleep. I usually only do this if I have at least 9 hours to sleep though, because otherwise it's VERY hard to wake up.
Also, In the morning, I try not to make too much a habit of it, but I usually find some coffee helps to get the brain awake. Also, no caffeine at all after about 2pm for me (I usually go to sleep between 12am and 2am, and wake up by 8, if I have caffeine after 2pm, it's nearly impossible for me to fall asleep before about 4am)
Also, it helps to wake up at the same time every day ... I fail at that, because on the weekends, I sleep in for a few extra hours, but it does screw up the sleep schedule quite a bit ...
Anyhow ... if you've dealt with this before, then all of what I said is probably already common knowledge but if you haven't dealt with insomnia too much before, maybe it'll help...
