I've been with this girl for 1 year now (Actually one year on Oct. 6). I've decided that there is no other mate for me and that I'm ready to settle down with this one. OK....number one.....how do I tell her parents?...and number 2....well number 2 is complicated. I want to propose to her at a concert which she thinks is sold out. But me being the quick individual that I am, I already have tickets and she doesn't know anything about them. By the way....the name of the performer is Carlos Vives. Now, I want to know if there is anyway that I can get Carlos Vives to ask Carol (my girlfriend), when a certain song plays (Luna Nueva), if she would marry me. The special thing about the concert is that she loves Carlos Vives AND its on our anniversary, Oct. 6. So how do I get carlos Vives to do me that favor? I'm in college so I really can't afford anything fancy and huge, i only have enough money for a nice ring. Well, those are the 2 problems. The parent thing isn't so hard I think, its the concert thing I'm wondering about. Also, anyone know of nice, affordable diamond engagment rings, on silver preferibly. Alright peeps, there you have it. One of Anandtech Forums' little people gettuing ready to take the next big step...marrage....I couldn't be more happy :D

make the night special but ask her yourself!

And make sure you ask her father for his blessing first. (not his permission, his blessing).

congrats on deciding to pop the question.

first off. what is an affordable ring to you?
second. she'll laugh at you if you give her a silver engagement ring. better make it white gold if you're going for that look.
third. ASK the parents for their blessing, don't tell.
fourth. good luck getting the artist to do that. I think it would be better to ask her yourself anyways

Sit down with her parents and tell them how you feel about their daughter and ask them for their blessing.

"Sir, I am in love with your daughter and have decided to ask her to marry her. I wanted to talk to you first to discuss my commitment to her and our future life together. I hope to get your blessing before I speak with her."

something to that effect...

That's bizarre. Ask her yourself.

You can't go wrong with the traditional way. Be a perfect gentleman and you will never regret it.

CONGRATS:)
Most importantly you must post the wedding pics for all of us "best men" at Anandtech.

Do you really want someone you don't even know to propose to your girlfriend for you? That sounds kinda lame to me. Go to the concert and have a fun time. Then take a walk or something and ask her yourself. It'll be SO much more romantic and memorable, IMO.

slow down amigo... whats the rush?
You have only known her a year and you are still in college.
Are you prepared/able to support yourself and her?
You claim to barely be able to afford a ring... but do you have 6 months of savings built up?

I might be in the minority, but I am somewhat against asking for the father's permission.
I don't agree with it in principle. Maybe if she was underage, I can understand, but say she's
26 and independent, and the girl has not lived with her parents since the age of 18, whats the use?

Sorry buddy..can't help you there. Maybe some of us aren't afraid of commitment and I think a year is all it took for me. Who cares if I'm in college. We both live with our parents and its not like were getting married tommorow...Im PROPOSING. And 6 months of saving?...what you talking about?.....I'm not gonna get her a 10 pound diamond ring, just something nice. I've seen very nice rings for $300 and up. Were moving out of our houses in about a year or so....transfering to Georgia Tech or Purdue hopefully. And I'm asking her parents out of respect. I'm still asking regardless if I get the father's approval or not. Either they're with me or against me.

Not asking for any help buddy

I have been in a relationship for over 3.5 years. I don't need a marriage certificate to prove I am commited. Nor has my girlfriend demanded a ring to prove a commitmnet

Perhaps you should become INDEPENDENT first. Living with your parents and not making $$$ is not a good way to start off a marriage. And about the parents thing, if there is one word of advice I can give you is don't ever let your parents, or her parents medle in your marital affairs. I have seen this first hand several times and it gets ugly....

BTW, I was saying 6 months of living expenses because as you might have not noticed, the economy is in the sh!ter with many overqualified people unemployed... What if you graduate and can't find a real job for a year? what then? I wasn't talking about the ring....

anyway.. congrats man.. i hope you and yours are very happy together for a very long time

also what's wrong with having the carlos guy to ask? i think it's pretty inventive.. you know like poeple putting up a proposal at a baseball game on the big lighted board? or written in the sky? stuff like that.. that's almost the same thing right? i wouldn't know how to go about it though.. you dont' have much tiem to contact him.. but i guess the best way would be to contact his record company and see if he could actually do anything like that.. maybe contact the arena he's going to play at, and go through them.. i dunno.. wild guesses

May I ask why you haven't married her yet or even proposed (if you haven't already)?

I don't like the idea of living with someone to "see how things work out" and then get married. I'll do whatever it takes to make it work, and I'm sure she will to. Eventually we have to move out because we're going to out-of-state colleges. We'll end up living together wherever it may be that we go. Alot of people wait till they get married to move out of their houses.

Cause I would pay more taxes than I do now (marriage tax penalty) :)

LOL....thast another thing I have to ask.....How would it affect the financial aid I get for school? would I get more or less?....for example I get $4000 (full Pell Grant) for 1 year. How would that change?

Well, I think it might actually help.... If your parents+you make more money than you+Wife, you will probably be better off since if your married, you don't have to disclose how much your parents make....

i think you should have him dedicate a song to you two.. but not have him ask her to marry you.... then you should ask her after the song if she'll marry you...

I think the concert idea is kind of cool, especially since she really likes the band. I think it's nice when men are inventive in their proposals.

You could try to contact them somehow and ask that before the song Luna Nueva, Carlos could say something like he dedicates that song to a very special couple and then says your name. Then, he could say something like.... "Carol, (insert your name here) has something very important to ask you." And then you could ask her to marry you.
