Thermic Lance!

Anyone use one or see it in use?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjDN7QPcuKM

Would this be able to cut through a safe (high end vault) without destroying the contents?

Anyone remember the movie Thief? That's what it looks like Frank used for the "burn job". Of course he wasn't interested in paper inside. ;)

Not seen one before...the closest that I've actually been around is a regular ol' oxyacetylene cutting torch. Boring by comparison!

From wikipedia:

MythBusters[4] tested the capabilities of the thermal lance and discovered opening a modern safe with a thermal lance takes far longer than depicted in popular accounts. The intense heat also destroyed the items inside the vault. The MythBusters concluded that using a thermal lance for safe-cracking is plausible, but impractical.

speaking of hot things, I saw this tool on DIY network to cut plate metal or sheet metal, it was basically a gun with a high voltage electrical charge, but it was nothing over the top, think it just plugged in a standard outlet. Anyone know what type of tool this would be? It was cutting through metal like butter. Could be awesome for ductwork and stuff.

Plasma cutter.

Yes for certain punching all the way through is going to put a lot of heat inside. Cutting the bolts and removing the door shouldn't do so bad. I suppose the loot would have to be pretty good to go through the hassle of dealing with containment, SCBA, fire detection management, etc. Definitely need a full crew! ;)

Oh and Mythbusters fail. Just another reality show that's boring IMHO.

We used to use those lances to remove tubesheets from heat exchangers.

Its smelly, nasty work, but it gets the job done.

Ours was a hollow magnesium rod with oxygen going through the middle of the tube, use a torch to light the magnesium, then stand back.

That's good advice. ;)

I've used a 15,000 watt laser for work...pretty damn sure it was faster than that lance. Though probably not quite as portable :p

Couldn't find any good pics or videos though, just a bunch of smaller CNC machines.

Oh well look at that, I guess you can get a portable 15kw laser...seems the military has one.

While 15kW is quite formidable in laser powers the output of a lance can reach several hundred kW for short periods. Only limited by fuel/pressure/oxidizer obviously.

In the future it may very well be possible to have processes using multiple megawatt (CW) or yottawatt (pulsed) devices for blasting and scalar weapons.
