That's a nifty scam...

I just got off the phone with Providence Home Services. They provide rental of my CPAP equipment.

They have been billing my insurance company @ the rate of $162 a month since January. Apparently they never updated my insurance info in mid April when my previous employer switched plan providers. So they successfully billed (and were paid for) January - April, & will be paid for April - July. Let's call it six months, or about $950.

Now rental of medical equipment is a rent to own, with the purchase price of my equipment probably somewhere in the $1200 - 1500 range. So you'd figure I'd own about 2/3 of it by now.

According to the woman I just talked to the purchase price resets if your insurance info changes.

So in short, my machine which they have thus far been paid $950 (and I will owe them $450 for the three months of no insurance) is now completely theirs again, & my new insurance provider (which I'm not signed up for yet) will have to pay for all over again.

That's a very nifty scam. I'm tempted to give them back their machine, tell them to shove off, & buy my own online for $600.

What the hell can I do other than pay them their money & let my new insurance start paying it down again?

They say the equipment is "primarily a rental", never mind the fact that I'll probably be using one for the rest of my life.

If I were to change insurance periods once a year the machine would NEVER be mine.

What's "CPAP equipment?"

helps you breathe easier when you're sleeping. At least that's what I got out of the site I looked up on google 🙂.

I'd call your Current insurance company and let them know that policy. I'm sure they'd love to know that since it'd save them a lot of money if it got paid off earlier. It might be illegal but I woudln't know.

okay now thats just scary looking, so do you have to bring this thing on long flights or with you to some chicks place after a party? is it just a regulated air pump?

I need to use it every time I sleep, though I sometimes go short periods (car/plane ride, etc.) without using it.

Basically it provides just enough air pressure to keep my throat from collapsing.

The real problem is not that I would suffocate, but the short stretches of not breathing lowers my blood oxygen level to the point of waking me up. When this happens 50+ times an hour you can guess how much REM sleep I get (none).
