Just picked up my phone to make a call, and there was a modem on the line.

We don't own a modem.

I thought the fax machine was freaking out. Turned it off, modem kept going.
Maybe it was the DirecTV dialing out. Turned that off, modem kept going.
Maybe I picked up wrong frequency. Switched channels, hung up and picked up again...same thing.

Hung up and picked up an extension line, and it was gone.

That was very, very odd.

You sure you didn't just happen to pick up an incoming fax call before it had a chance to ring?

Fax sound != modem sound

You pick up on an incoming fax and it goes "beep........beep........beep"
Plus my fax machine wasn't even set to auto answer.

When I picked up it had the "twang...shhhhhhhh...twang..." of a modem. Faxes don't do that.

Good lord, I'm a nerd.

Sometimes you will hear that when telemarketers computer system calls you to mark that your phone number is valid

Did you try plugging in a non-cordless phone? Your phone might be picking up signals in the same frequentcy as another phone, or your phone line could have been crossed off your property.

I would call your phone company.

1. Do you have a Tivo? Direct-TV?
2. Do you have Wireless Network
3. If it was a cordless phone, sometimes when it trys to authenicate to the base, due to interference, it will try and try, which is what you probably heard.
