That One Great Employee

Inspired by bsobel's thread.

Sadly, I've come across that 'extraordinary' employee too few times but the times that I did were amazing. One of my experiences...

In November 2002, I bought a Tony Stewart Winston Cup champion t-shirt in an eBay auction using the BIN. The seller was selling 50 shirts of that size and most of that size were sold out by the time I got mine. This seller was doing the same with the other sizes BTW and they were going quickly all the way around because this was Tony Stewart's first champsionship.

Anyway, I paid immediately and received an email an hour or so later saying that the shirt would be shipped out the next day. All seemed good. A week goes by and no shirt. I get the seller's contact info and call him. A guy answers and says he doesn't know what I'm talking about and hangs up on me. I'm pissed!

So I immediately contact eBay and make a claim. Then I contact his local police department (Murfreesboro, TN) and tell them everything that's going on. Imagine getting a call from Houston, TX from some chick about a $30 t-shirt bought off of eBay! The first officer I spoke with had no idea about eBay but said there was another officer around that knew about 'things like that'. So he gets on the phone and I tell him the story again and makes sure he understands how many people this guy is scamming. He takes down my contact info and says he'll give the guy a call.

A couple of hours later, the police officer calls me at work and says the guy sounded suspicious and said he would swing by the seller's residence after he got off his shift. The next morning, the officer calls me and says that the seller's roommate took over his account while he was out of town (yeah right) but that he (the seller) would definitely be refunding my money (it was only about $30 total after S/H). Sure enough, a couple of hours later the money was back in my PP account.

I never really honestly expected it to turn out like it did. I figured I was scammed and was glad it just wasn't for that much money. The fact that THAT police officer took it upon himself to help me on his 'off' time meant a lot to me.

That afternoon, I typed up a letter and mailed it to his Captain commending the officer for his work on my behalf over such a trivial matter. I never expected the guy to go over to his house over such a small thing. I really just wanted my complaint to be filed because I figured at least a couple other buyers would be doing the same thing.

So do you have a story about an outstanding employee somewhere that helped you out past what they really 'needed' to do?

No cliffs. Read. :)

Somebody tried to scam my dad for ~$1k on eBay on a magazine my dad bought. I did some research and found the guys exact residence and we contacted a local officer which we found through my uncle who was an NJ cop (seller lived in NJ, dad in TX). My dad happened to be going to NJ on business the following week so the officer and he made a side trip to the scammer's house.

My dad had a full western union refund less than 12 hours later.

I know there are those of you who think that it was the officer's job to do something about it, but I still think that officer deserves a thank you card.

I had a similar experience with REI. I'm on a college campus and had no way to pickup a mountain bike I got on a ridiculous sale ($175 for a $600 bike) that was sitting in the store 10 miles away. So I called to ask if it would be alright for a cab company to pick it up on my behalf. The bike tech there put it in the back of his Honda Element and drover in the pouring rain to my dorm and got me my bike.

It is the little onions we give in life that truly matter.

More to come!

Back in HS, me and 2 of my buddies went to Home Depot with the idea that we were going to build an 8 person beer bong. Basically, our plan was to take one of the 5 gallon water jugs to the plumbing aisle and go from there. So an employee sees what we're doing, and he winds up helping us out with the entire thing from top to bottom. The guy must've been with us for at least an hour and he was extremely patient and courteous, and even marked down some tubing that we needed.

The problem is at Home Depot, they're not allowed to take tips. So he was getting off for lunch soon, so we stuck around, bought him lunch and gave him a 20 spot. Also talked to one of the ASMs about how helpful and courteous he was, and wound up writing a letter to the store.

As we were walking up the register, he also said that if we were ever planning on building the other type of bong, he'd be more than glad to help us out if he got to see it in action ;)

Correct, because I read "back in HS" and "beer bong." Grape juice is the only logical conclusion, giving the circumstances.

It's never too young to enjoy the great anti-oxidant benefits of grape juice.

Beer bongs cause things to spiral downward quickly, what did you expect?

I was kinda hoping others might have had an outstanding experience with an employee somewhere that really helped them out. Not their fellow employee mind ya ;)

I didn't expect it to turn into a pot-smoking thread. But then this is ATOT. Immaturity rules. LOL

Another experience I had was with HS.
The head of student of affairs basically agreed to give me a high school diploma after I decided to drop out of private school a month into my senior year. All i had to do was take a few night courses at Harvard Extension school. This gave me the opportunity to take a full time mentor and tutoring role and be done with school, even though he could have made me come to the high school in town everyday, he understood my longing to pursue other interests.

not to toot my own horn or anything, but in college i was working at a golf course about 30 min from my house. one day this guy lost a club (some cheap 8-iron or something) and called the proshop where i was working after he got home. after i found it in the lost and found, i took down his info to put with the club when he picked it up, i noticed his phone number was in the area very close to my house so i asked him if he lived there and he said yes. i told him i'd bring it to him on my way home.

i really tried to help out the customers who were genuinely nice. if you acted like a dick (tons of grumpy old guys at golf courses) your tee time "might" somehow be delayed. :)

Today's youth is sad. If they're the ones that are going to be taking care of me when I'm of the 'older age', I feel much better about beating them over the head with my cane in the future..

But then I never thought I would feel bad about beating them anyway.....

Awww, eff it. I hope they get a concussion from my damned cane in the future.

Seems like it doesn't happen that often. Most people seem to be nomimating themselves (LOSERS *cough jonnyjack cough*). Sad.
