I am running windows 1709 with AMD driver 17.11.2
Everything is working fine. While playing bioshock infinite, my pc suddenly restarts and starts installing 17.11.1.
without any prior notification.
That is so stupid, to have a special game mode in windows 10 1709 but not preventing a windows update from forcing a restart while gaming. Typical of course a microsoft issue.
Basically reverting my driver.

How to turn off driver updates :
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc730606(v=ws.10).aspx

To enable or disable searching Windows Update manually on a single computer
  1. Click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Properties.

  2. In the Tasks list, click Advanced System Settings.

  3. On the System Properties dialog box, click the Hardware tab, and then click Windows Update Driver Settings.

  4. Select Never check for drivers when I connect a device.

  5. Click OK twice, and then close the System dialog box.

I had to install 17.11.2 again after this.

Strange thing is that i had not had any start menu problems anymore.
I thought it was because i disabled the console lock out.
But around the same time i also installed 17.11.2
And i am not sure what helped. Because up till 10 minutes ago i had not seen the startmenu failure anymore for a week.
Maybe it is coincidence but as soon as the driver was reverted back to 17.11.1, my startmenu stopped working after a restart. Now i am on 17.11.2 (AMD /RTG RX480) again and i will have to wait and see. After a few restarts the startmenu still works.

It seems i have mistaken 17.11.2 and 17.11.1.
The release date of 17.11.2 is two days ago. I could not have had that driver for a week.
Sigh. Not more than 3 to 4 hours of sleep for a week is getting to me.
But what i do not get is that i am sure i had an 17.11.x version.
And after the sudden restart windows mentioned installing an update for an AMD graphic device.
That has me confused. Perhaps a WHQL version of 17.11.1 ? Does anybody know ?

Weird thing is that nothing is present in the regular windows 10 update history about this update.
Thus i went to control panel and checked with add/remove programs and checked the installed windows components and there was a log of installing KB4048955.
The only one at November 18, 2017. Which is today.

KB4048955 is an update to windows 1709.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4048955/windows-10-update-kb4048955
Build is now 16299.64

This is really messy.

I will just leave this here :

Buried deep within the old Control Panel, Windows 10 still has the option to avoid installing drivers as part of Windows Updates. For most of us, the drivers are a welcome addition to keep things running smoothly, but the tinkerers out there like things a certain way, and updating a driver might change previously stored settings.
