thar she blows

I love the title, haha. Its great how these articles make no mention that amd is the company that created this 64bit instruction set 😛

What a terrible article.

"We chose to go with a faster front side bus, faster subsystem, and PCI Express." Yeah, real informative there. Intel hasn't been using higher FSB speeds since the introduction of the Williamette . . . no, never. And what exactly do they mean by "faster subsystem"? And does anyone really care about their decision to support PCI Express devices? I certainly don't, and apparently AMD doesn't either.

Another fun quote intended to highlight the differences between Nocona and the Opteron, "Intel, for example, does not support AMD's 3DNow graphics instructions, he said."

Hahahahahahahahahaha *cough* ahem translation: "We're not completely ripping off their instruction sets. Look, we're not using their dated 3dNow graphics instructions that make no difference at this point in time!"

In other news, AMD announced that their next generation of 64-bit systems will not be supporting the VESA Local Bus standard.

While the market leader embracing the tech is the best thing that could happen to 64bit computing, I have to agree that the press release and maketese in it are nothing short of laughable.

lmao, truly said. didn't intel make a statement a while ago that consumers wouldn't need 64-bit instruction sets 😀

What did you expect a PR guy to say? They all talk like that, no matter who they work for.

It depends on the product. I expect a certain amount of "marketese" from PR guys. However, PR guys have to bend over backwards to sell a bum steer, and it seems that's what the poor Intel guy had to do in that article.

He obviously can't make his own product sound BAD, but the fact that he had to struggle to say anything good about it, or distinguish its engineering from the Opteron, says a lot about Nocona.

Poor PR guy.

Except that there is scant evidence that Nocona is a "bum steer" yet.

It is also pretty typical of Intel's chips to look less than stellar at introduction.

I was interested in this article linked from the OP's article which mentions 2 new instructions to be added by AMD in the future. I think they are to help AMD combat hyperthreading's task switching abilities.

2 new AMD64 instructions
