Thanks to those who made me go widescreen.

I haven't gamed yet in widescreen mode but looking at high-res photographs, particularly scenery, is extraordinarily immersive, like looking though a window. Started doing Photoshop art again. 🙂

Gaming, Photoshop, whatever. If going WS has drawn you further into the computing experience, then it was a good choice.

Welcome 😀

Widescreen sucks. Most games don't support widescreen resolutions and I hate playing a game with those black borders, know what I'm sayin'? My 21" ViewSonic P810 CRT is the REAL gaming monitor and y'all know it.

Haha, I have a Westinghouse 47" 1080p monitor and Oblivion at 1920x1080 could not look better... so much more you can see on ws just makes everything better.

There is a widescreen workaround for most all games even original UT. Once I go in a put my widescreen res in the ini or whatever it looks perfectly fine to me. No black borders or anything.

Glad you're enjoying it! But ya widescreen is great, most new games support it and as Sniper82 mentioned there's workarounds for most every other. You should check out the Supreme Commander demo (full retail comes out in a few days), it looks truly amazing at 1920x1200 on a 24" panel. Sorry Screwface, 4:3 is t3h suck!11one1!!!1

But ya widescreen makes everything on the PC more productive/enjoyable. So much more real estate to juggle all those windows and lessens the need for multiple monitors. Multiple monitors are still useful though and offer even more flexibility with a wide panel.

Painman, wtf! You stepped it up big time...weren't you looking at a 24"? That thing must be awesome though, but I cringe at the thought of how much you probably paid for it. Maybe I'll look into something like that my next go around but for now I'm happy with the Gateway.

 x2 for saying "y'all" 😛

And the "REAL gaming CRT" would be the Sony GDM-FW900 24" widescreen CRT (or other monitors with the same tube.)

I really just need to pull the trigger on the Hans-G 1440x900 panel @newegg. I just can't see my 6600gt keeping up well with that many pixels though...

It does a great job with 1024x768 🙂

if you're gonna spend that kind of bucks a 7800GS OC is currently 'only' $160 after MIR and the x1950p can be found closer to $200 now ...

if you have PCIe it's even cheaper

*bang*

😀

Go here to widescreengaming forum for A to Z list . ,WS rocks for gaming.

I have loads of game that support WS mode and yes there are work arounds for other games that don't support WS res, I even got Morrowind and the expansion packs to run in native 1680x1050 res.
Btw my black Samsung 1100DF 21" CRT is hardly used now since I went WS last year.

Yeah, I've been keeping up with your threads and I'll be steering clear of the 1950p...at least from Craphire...

The 7800GS is tempting, as is the 7600gt AGP (I'm still on the AGP platform.

I guess this is all moot as I'll be building a new comp in a few months anyways. I should just pull the trigger now and deal with the lower frames for a few months.

that is honestly something i would *not* do

again ... just my opinion...
perhaps something *better* then your LCD may come out ... or it may go 'on sale' in the next few months .... will you lose out by waiting? [considering you are doing a rig *makeover*]

Craphire ... kinda catchy
😀

seriously ... only their RMA policy is Crap 😉

Thanks. It's good to be back.🙂

I got the BenQ FP241W. Got a buyer for my trusted Samsung 900NF CRT for $50, though I'm starting to wonder if I should keep it to play old games as Might & Magic is listed nowhere in the widescreen forum pages.

dennilfloss:Actually I have Might and Magic 8 installed on my 20 inch WS LCD,it looks pretty good even stretched to WS mode.

I just tried MM7 stretched and it is blurred. 🙁 The 'expand while maintaining aspect ratio' option in ATI Control Panel seems to have no effect. Can no longer use Catalyst Control Center for some reason (won't open, I guess some .net issue I fail to fix), so I am using CP with 6.12 drivers.

Denni, you have the updated firmware model, right? Try using the panel's scaling instead.

Yeah, I went nuts 🙂 but I'm a picky guy. I tend to hold onto displays for a long time, and this one won't be an exception. Yes it cost a lot, but there likely won't be any "woulda, coulda, shoulda" down the road. I'm very pleased with with what I got.

Stupid having to wait for tax returns to get mailed out. going through widescreen withdrawls using my 19 CRT.......must....get....widescreen........soon!

Agreed. Come out of your CRT cave and join the future, nub! 😛
