Thanks to everyone for suggesting .....What games to look for in the "bargain bin"?

I have only just recently gotten into playing PC games. I really liked Ghost Recon and absolutely loved MOHAA!

Tried Sacrifice and Myst but lost interest quickly and removed them from my systems. Also tried Black & White, found it OK and still play on occassion.

My question is, what older games would you suggest, based on my limited exposure and could be found in my local computer store bargain bins? Games that I would have missed out on and you keep playing over and over again.

Also, what newer games would you suggest?

Thanks for your suggestions.

Quake II
Half Life
Unreal Tournament

If you ever want to consider yourself a gamer, you must have these games. 🙂

They should all be under $20 now.

RPG:
Planetscape Torment
Fallout (1 & 2)

Adventure:
Grim Fandango
Full Throttle
Monkey Island (any)
The Longest Journey
Myst (there...I said it)

RTS:
StarCraft (Battle Chest)
Total Annihilation

Simulation:
Mechwarrior Platinum
X-Wing (either Alliance or Collector Series)
Freespace 1 & 2
Mig Alley (hardcore)

FPS:
Outlaws
Duke Nukem 3D (Hail to the King, Baby!)
Quake/Doom/etc.
System Shock 1 & 2
Jedi Knight
Deus Ex

Other:
Crusader (No Remorse and No Regret - isometric shooters)

Thanks guys.

Don't forget, I'm a newbie at games so can some one tell me what the acronym RTS stand for?

I know;
FPS = first person shooter
RPG = roll playing game

Any others I need to know?

You might wanna try some TBS=Turn Based Strategy

XCOM: UFO Defense
Heroes of Might and Magic 1, 2, or maybe 3. I think they even have the complete series as a pack now.
Fallout: Tactics (which I just got at gogamer and am playing now)

RTS=Command and Conquer Red Alert Series. I think they've got bargains on a Red Alert series pack.

Check out http://www.the-underdogs.org for abandonware games.

I always do a quick check at www.gamespot.com and check their reviews, to give me an idea as to whether I'll like a game or not.

Check www.gogamer.com

I've always felt that I could be happy playing nothing but games under $10 and playable demos. I'm not a FPS player, but, I have to admit that I was really blown away by MOHAA, which you liked. I got it for a decent price at gogamer.

Serious Sam (Episodes 1 & 2) - great FPS (mindless shooter) the first one can be had for $10 the other for under $20.

Thief II - a great sneaker.

Agree with Half-Life (including its standalone mods Blue Shift, and Opposing Forces) and Unreal (there is a 3 game bundle now under $20).

Also suggest - Star Trek: Elite Forces and No One Lives Forever.

Newer games: Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Max Payne.

I picked up Giants: Ctiizen Kabuto at EB for $2.99 used.

New Games ya might like:

Dungeon Siege
Freedom Force

FPS

Sin
Unreal
Shogo MAD
System Shock 2

RTS

Total Annihilation
AoE2 (AoE is good too, but suffers from poor pathing and poor AI))
Settlers 2 or 3

Turn Based Strategy

Civilization 2
Alpha Centauri
(avoid Civilization clones, especially Call to Power)

Racing ( a wheel is recommended)

NFS series especially Porsche Unleashed (some of the older NFS series may not work depending on your OS)
Viper Racing
TOCA 2
Sports Car GT(get a wheel for this one)
PowerSlide

My favorite game is American McGee's Alice in Wonderland= Not sure kind of a mixture of stuff

Quake2= FPS

I just got Spiderman the Movie.= not sure, fighting I guess

A lot of people liked The Longest Journey= Adventure

Some people like Final Fantasy (just pick one). but I never could get into them. = stratagey

That is all I can think of for now. I'm not much of a gammer though, good luck.

Some games you should be able to find/pick up for cheap:

-Age of Empires 2
-Star Craft
-Homeworld (GREAT GAME)
-Mech Warrior 3
-Giants Citizan Kabuto
-Deus Ex
-Serious Sam
-Half Life (YOU MUST GET THIS GAME)

Real Time Strategy..........Total Annihilation ( I still play this about twice a week )

Sports Simulation.............Links 2001 (golf....incredible...)

Have fun !!

*COUGH* who said Halflife was under 20 bucks? its been sitting high at 30-40 for the longest time. I've been vulturing my friends CD key for counter-strike for the loooooongest time waiting for HL to drop to bargain range, but noooooooo, it sits there laughing at me.

on that note, anyone wanna donate a unique key to me? pweeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase 😀

Dues Ex was possibly one of the top three PC games ever created, although I'm not sure if it'd be in the bargain bin or not. There's a good chance it could be, and if you ever see it, BUY IT! 🙂

*COUGH* who said Halflife was under 20 bucks?

Look (search) in Hot Deals . . . it was running yesterday under $20 (online). And Deus Ex is at Circuit City and other B&Ms for around $19.95 (even Hawaii).

EDIT: MDK2 is a great bargain bin game . . . wicked humor (and maybe a few too many jumping puzzles since it is a console port, but great fun anyway).

If you arent running XP and you can play DOS games, try to find Master Of Magic. I know The underdogs site has it... this is one of my all time favorite games.

Masters of Magic rocked! My roommate and I used to stay up ALL night playing it on his 25MHz 386! It was awful setting that game up though. It needed something like 610kb free base memory???
I should load that up again. The later turns in the game would take forever on that 386. Now it should be pretty sweet!

No One Lives Forever is a great first-person shooter. And it's pretty funny, too. It seems to me that lately games have been too serious and not much fun to play. I know it's possible for a game to not be fun and still be entertaining but...where's my damn fun?!?

Also, one more vote for Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed. Just today I was thinking of reinstalling it again. I've seen it in those VHS-size boxes for $12.99!

Deus Ex is great, sort of a thinking man's FPS.
Max Payne is great, think the Matrix as a game. Real cool.
Freedom Force is outstanding, a superhero RTS.
NFS: Porshe Unleased took up lots of my time. It has almost every Porshe ever made.

That's about it. What I'm really waiting for is the GTA3 PC version which is coming out at the end of this month.

if you see Driver on sale, DO NOT FALL FOR IT. Sucka$$. Cops are WAAAAAAAYYYY too fast. Turn a corner and the cop rearends you, flipping you around. frickin frustration city.

Serious Sam is a classic already. Don't know about HL. Saw Deus Ex and got Driver instead😱. didn't know any better! still haven't got UT working right in my a7n266-c board, yet. sound is crap.

If you like WWII land combat, Close Combat II: A Bridge Too Far is very good. I just saw it for $5 at Staples a few weeks ago.
