I am building my 1st rig. I have ordered the below items with the help of these forums, among others. What do y'all think?

Athlon 1700 XP
Asus A7V266-E with on board sound
Antec SX1040 with 400 watt PS and 4 fans
PNY Geforce3 TI200
rounded IDE cables... colored no less
512 MB Crucial DDR
24x10x40 Sexy Plexy CDRW
56x creative CD
80 Gig WD 7200
speakers and monitor later.

www.newegg.com was where it was ordered from, very easy site to navigate and order from.

Will be running Win2000 Pro, possibly dual boot wit a dist of Linux, undecided

I think you will be very happy with that system. The only thing I would have changed is the motherboard. Not to say that motherboard is bad, it just too expensive. However, you definitely have some good support backing that motherboard. All of your components are of very high quality. Nice selection.

IMO, I think you should've picked up a DVD drive instead. CD-ROM drives are almost obsolete, and DVD drives can read both types of media. But I think you had a pretty good reason not to pick one up, so I'll get off that subject. You have a pretty nice system...let's hope you enjoy it! 😉

I already got the Plextor. Christmas gift 🙂

I will upgrade to a DVD once faster, cheaper, and better writers come out. Then the cd's will be gone.
