I just put together a new system for work and I installed WinXP and everything worked fine. I moved over my old work hard drive into my new system and now I'm screwed. The computer works fine, however I can't get any of my data from my old hard drive. All the folders are accessible except for "c:/documents...\phil"....it says access denied.

So I put my old hdd back in my old work computer to move the data over to the shared folders. It will not boot up at all. It just keeps rebooting. Any ideas??? How do I get this back up?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

🙁🙁🙁🙁🙁

Right now it is plugged in as my secondary drive - D:

Thanks in advance.

I think we need a more precise and complete description of the old hard drive and its history. What OS was installed on it? What file system was used? What genera security features were you using on your personal files -- especially if you were using encryption.

Solving this issue may be quite simply a matter of logging in as an administrative level user and taking ownership of the directory structures to which you need access.

I'm not sure this works the same way in Windows XP if you're using simple file sharing. And I don't think you can turn WinXP Home Edition's simple file sharing off. However, if I remember correctly, you can log on under the built-in admin account in Safe Mode and still get access to that type of control of access control lists through the GUI. Otherwise, you could use the CMD prompt and have at it using CACLS.

But give us some more information. If you tell us enough I'm sure we'll be able to help you get to the data.

The old hard drive had winxp pro on it. I used the same OS to install it on this hdd as well. Both are using NTFS and I didn't do anything fancy with the security of the data. Just a simple pw to get into my profile. When I put the drive as my secondary drive, everything works fine except for my folder. When I disconnected the hdd and put it back in my old machine.....I couldn't even get it into safe mode.

I haven't tried doing anything in dos, but I that may be a good idea if I can't figure out anything else from here.....

DOS wont help you with NTFS, but prosaic is correct..you just need to take ownership of the folder and you'll have access to all your files. Put it back into the new rig as a slave or whatever and you can take ownership of the drive by turning off simple sharing as he stated and take over ownership of your user profile folder in the advanced security property pages...

ok just tried dos......says invalid directory when i type cd phil

yet i see a dir for phil

I dont get this....
