Noticed this this past week.

However this was activated(fixed) - it is much appreciated.😀

I think he means when a non subscriber clicks on a subscriber link, the url is reformatted from, "subscriber . anandtech" to "forums . anandtech"

But that doesn't happen... The subscriber servers translate "forums" to "subscriber" but the forums server (cuz there really only is one, isn't there 😛) doesn't translate jack. EagleKeeper getting a fluke?

Does this mean that people will finally quit yelling when someone accidentally forgets to replace the "subscriber" in a link? Sweet.

No, that will only happen when lazy-ass people right-click > Copy Shortcut then Paste and change "subscriber" to "forums"

If this works and I assume it does, this is what you non subscribers should be doing. Well, other than subscribing that is. 🙂

someboyd should write out the process for non=subscribers so they know what to do

I truly hope that non-subscribers can access subscriber links in the near future, it's thoroughly annoying to have to replace every URL that a subscriber posts/sends to you.

I'm going to explain this, as those that are "annoyed" that this doesn't happen don't quite understand how this works. There is no way to change links for subscribers without modifying core code, which we are not going to do as that ruins any upgrade path in the future builds of the forums. Now, for the subscribers it was easy to do a swap of url if they clicked on a forum link then fire them to the subscriber servers, just using a top template that is modifyble. It is impossible to do it the other way around, as when you enter subscriber.anandtech.com it is going to the subscriber servers right away, then it is going to go through the subscriber authentication checks. It just isnt going to happen guys, sorry but sometimes you can't have what you want.

thanks for the reply zuni 🙂

oh well.. i guess in the mean time we'll just have to make do. its not like it really takes that much extra time or anything.

can't non-subscribers edit some host file on their computer or something...

yes, this was mentioned earlier, just tell it to redirect subscriber.anandtech to forums.anandtech

i'm not sure on the specificis of how to do that though.

Unless you're a subscriber, you'll have to change the links. It's not going to kill you to do it. Either that or simply pay the $3.xx per month to subscribe. :frown:

From my 2 month old thread:

Open up your HOSTS file, inside the "C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc" folder. Add the following line on the end of the file:

216.151.100.125 subscriber.anandtech.com

This way, any link going to subscriber.anandtech.com will be redirected the forums.anandtech.com server.
DON'T FORGET: Remove that line the day you subscribe to the forums!

This is just a workaround for us hardcore freeloaders ... use this if you know what you are doing.
