My girlfriend was was with me inthe studio a couple weeks ago and fell in love with the mac osx desktop. I have heard some of you on certain post say there is a windowblinds mod to make it look like osx taskbar.

Do you need special icons or what not?

Give me some advice on this as her desktop is boring and skins dont cut it.
 
I believe you can get the windows start menu to look like the dock, but I'm not sure what it is called or where you would get it, maybe someone else can chime in.
 
you can search for yzdock on google and download it. it works like the os x dock. sometimes it causes problems when shutting down.

I don't know why people like the os x desktop so much, but I guess all flash and no substance = $$$. I'd rather have a desktop that works, but call me crazy.

OS X's desktop is very usable.

XP doesn't have flash?

I said all flash. XP can have flash if you want it to. But Apple doesn't give you a choice. And how is forcing the user to quit every application by going to file/quit a "usable" desktop? That's just one annoyance by the way.

Most animated? Find a discount copy of "MS Bob" somewhere, I guess. I'm not making any comments on the actual usability of said software though; never used it myself.
 
Apple + Q is one way, right clicking the icon in dock and clicking quit is another.. you people are lazy 😛
 
intead of yzdock, try www.objectdock.com its really matured and is up to version 1.1 iirc... i used it for a while but got sick of it, but you can make it look exactly like that mac toolbar and its a lot more stable than yzdock.

oh i got sick of the look of it, not cause it caused any problems, btw.

Yeah, you are.
compusaguy is one of the many Wintel users that like to bash Apple/OSX without having actually used it for more than 5 minutes before coming to the conclusion that "OMFGBBQ thsi suxx0rs so hard Appl si gay!".

This forum is full of them.

And to the OP, here is one OS-X theme for XP, it's just cosmetics, no functional difference like yz Dock and other similar apps.
 
I found "aqua dock" after googling for about an hour I looked into object desktop and it seems it has lots of overhead crap she would never use/need although i have looked at it before and like the fact they split up the programs instead of making one huge one. She already has styleXP to skin her desktop. she wanted something basically to clean the clutter of the taskbar and desktop w/ the osx animated thing.

i personally cant get used to anything than the xp taskbar with 100 shortcuts.

aqua dock it works pretty cool its almost identical to the osx launchbar except for the minimizing/maximizing. you just drag and drop the icons you want on it. Best thing is that it fits on a floppy.

Note: as for the bickering, osx desktop is very usable and efficient... for mac needs (we use it in the studio protools, logic audio...etc) and almost every program uses the same keyboard shortcuts (even the cd drives and power button). If your gonna pay an extra $1000 for an injection molded computer case you might as well get cute animated icons. using the entire mac gui for pc i dont see worth it.
 
I also say that objectdock is the best....here is what mine looks like, its easy to use, all you have to do is when a shorcut is put on your desktop you just drag it to object dock, then delete the shortcut on your desktop. Also, i set objectdock to hide the windows taskbar and to start up when windows starts.

i quickly browsed through the themes on wincustomize.com, dont want to sound n00bish but exactly what objects are they if you dont mind me asking?

The only thing I dont see is where do all active window buttons go and where the start menu replacement is. Like as in when you minimize a window? do they get docked as well? Actually those are my only two concerns from that as she will get confused as hell when it comes to objects.

Edit: I am a lot more interested in object dock. anyone using the pay version or is the free one fine and cripple free?

Ok. Object Dock is exactly what i was looking for. For the start menu I just made an icon for the start menu folder in Documents and Settings.

I've used Bob, and it was like playing a game more than actually doing anything useful. It also didn't feel like a computer when you were moving furniture around, or opening a safe to get to a file that you don't want anyone else to open.

As for those ppl who think OS X is crap because they have to go application menu-> quit, just think of windows where you need to close every single window to close an app 😛.

Uhm, what in the world? Just go to the File menu, select Exit. Or ALT+F, X. Done. That's been pretty standard on all apps since at least Windows 3.1.

Well, the most customizable+flashy, anyway.

Xgl will hardware-accelerate rendering of the desktop, a la OS X. That, plus E17, should be quite spectacular.

Pretty cool. Not quite up to the level of OSX for aesthetics, but not bad at all for open source. Good choice of tunes by the way!
