after a week 'off' the internet [i decided to keep the phone lines open for emergencies] . . . i saw this and a lot of PMs.

Worried about Apoppin
[since it is 'locked', i cannot respond there . . . and decided to make a new 'fire' thread].

Thank-you very much for your concerns . . . the fires were beyond 'close' . . . the firefighters actually chose my property to drive two bulldozers side-by-side right thru my property to create an extra 20' of firebreak . . . and then backburned the brush toward the main blaze.

Fortunately the wind was on our side [also] and the fires never actually hreatened our home [the firefighters congratulated me on having cleared enough brush to make it "easy to defend your property".

We were under mandatory evacuation orders for about 5 days but since my mother got out of hospital the day before the fire started, i decided to stay [and didn't get ANY sleep for 3 days and nights] . . . it was pretty stressful, but NOTHING like the people who actually lost property.

Now . . . our biggest problem is water - flooding is quite possible and thunderstorms are forecast for today .. . . . i have to make further preparations.

BTW, i [still] LOVE this area . . . .
. . . and fires shouldn't be a concern for a few more years [there isn't anything left to burn]

:)

oh man, that must've been weird/exiciting/scary at the same time (sort of, in a way.....).

Glad to know you're okay though.

a mod quote from the other thread linked in the OP:

"Actually the Fires are mostly in remote areas, I doubt Apopin is in any kind of serious danger. As usual the press is making this out to be more sensational than it really is."

is the mod a republican?

SoCal's seasons..Summer..Fire..Flood.

Glad your OK. I only read of one death, a mile outside of Pioneer Town.

Have your sand bags ready ;) I loved our desert when dirt riding in the '70s. Did alot of
exploring, more of that than racing. Hope you not near a wash.

So apoppin is a desert rat.! I understand and have several friends that will never leave
the high areas.

well, a mandatory evacuation is a sign of "serious danger" :p

this fire was not exaggerated by the press in any way - BTW - the "Press" was parked further away from the fire (on my street) than my house . . . it caused hundreds of families to evacuate and is still capable of causing even more damage if it gets into the national forest toward Big Bear.

We are at the end of the road - right in a remote area - next to the cliffs. :p

now it's 'water' we gotta worry about . . . sigh.

{oh yeah . . . the computer was set up on the kitchen table - for quick disconnect and run - and i played Oblivion "in between" . . . continuously . . . Level 87 now . . . almost 1000 hours} :p

actually i am a surfer that got landlocked . . . it's 2 hours drive to San Diego and La Jolla's reefs . . . not too bad.

And the high desert is a great place to live! . . . except for fire and flood . . . but where is 'safe'? The MidWest has tornadoes . . . the Gulf coast and the East has hurricanes. :p

While Palm Springs set a 'record' on Saturday [118F] were were "only" 104F at 3,000 ft elevation . . . where else can you grow citrus, apples and cherries on the same property?
