I posted this in the mid-range guild thread, don't know if you saw it:

1/6/2013 update:
i5 3570K + ASRock Z77 Pro3 combo $282 AP
Samsung DDR3 1600 8GB 1.35V $40
Powercolor 7970 $360 AR
Plextor M5S 128GB $108
Seagate 2TB $90 AP
Lite-ON DVD Burner $17
Rosewill Hive 650W $60 AP
Corsair 300R $50 AR AP
Total: $1007 AR AP

First time poster, I basically built your 1/6/13 version of your mid-range system. Thanks for keeping this thread up to date as it was a great help for a first time builder like me. I only made a few changes. When I received my 300R case in the mail the front panel was smashed off so I returned it and searched for a tougher case. I wound up buying a C70 Vengeance, it was a little pricy but I loved the military green and ammo box styling that it offered. I also skipped the SSD for now and installed a WD black 1TB. Installing the OS on an SSD and using the HDD for data was a little daunting for a first time builder like myself so I kept it simple. Maybe in the future when larger SSD's are available for a decent price I'll buy one. So far this system awesome!! Downloaded Far Cry 3 and it rocks with the graphics turned all the way up. I installed a Hyper 212 cooler so I can OC in the future. I never OC'd a computer before so I'm running it stock right now and it still flies. Anyway, thanks again!

---So as a follow up question, I accidentally ordered two packs of the Samsung DDR3 1600 8GB 1.35V ram from Amazon. I only installed the two 4GB sticks in the proper slots according to the motherboards manual. Can I install the other two in the available slots on the Asrock z77 Pro3 for 4x4GB=16GB? Will the computer automatically recognize them or will I have to change anything in the BIOS? Would there be any advantage to doing this? I built this computer for playing the latest games and surfing the internet, nothing else to mention. If I won't notice anything I'll just return them. Thanks for the help!

Yes, you can use them in a 4x4 configuration. And you are not going to see any real difference in your use case so you are fine returning them. Glad the build went so well. Adding the SSD later will be a nice bump.

OK, I thought I read somewhere that 8GB of ram was all you needed for gaming but I didn't know if that was outdated information. This graphics card is amazing, I haven't played PC games since the Xbox 360 came out. I'm amazed at the detail and frame rate in 1080p. Far Cry 3 and Spec Ops are absolutley beautiful to look at. I just have to brush up on my mouse+keyboard skills after using a controller for so long. As for the SSD, I'm holding out hope that one day a 1TB will be available for a reasonable price (say $300 maybe) and I can install and save everything on that.

8gb is still plenty for gaming - adding any more just for gaming purposes only is pretty much a waste. You'll only appreciate running more than 8gb if you do some things that can use the extra memory (i.e. Photoshop, video editing, running virtual machines, etc).

Agree. It is up to you if it is worth your time to return them. Since the extra kit was only roughly $40, I would just hang onto it and enjoy 16 GB.
