I really hope and believe Stem Cell research will do great things in the years to come. I have a friend who is close to dying of Huntington's Disease. It's very sad and there's not a damn thing to stop this terrible illness. I also had a friend pass away 10 years ago from ALS.

while im for stem cell research (one thing i disagree w/ bush on), i voted against this amendment b/c all the $ went to one company. However, most importantly, being fiscally conservative (the deficits KILL me), I couldn't vote for a $3 billion measure when we are $15 billion in debt. In my heart I'm glad it passed though.

I researched this Prop a LOT. The money will go to many companies/universities. Other companies outside of Cali. are already planning on opening up officies in California in an attempt to secure funding and grow their operations. I also REALLY hate debt because it only kills you later on. But hopefully, this research will financially benefit Cali. sooner verses later. I'm pretty sure it will.

Same feeling for me. I voted against every bond measure out of principle of not borrowing into more deficit. But I support the goals. We are getting a head start on the rest of the world and country. Hopefully it pays off in jobs and business.

There would be PLENTY of money for stem cell research if the government stopped taxing everything in sight. Now we are supposed to applaud that it is taxing us EVEN MORE for this research? This is flipping moronic.

No. There is a LOT of misinformation out there on Embryo Stem Cell research. The "embryo" consists of 100-200 cells which come from fertility clinics (i.e., these are embryos which are only 1-2 days old and literally have NO genetic coding). If the embryos are not used for research, they'll be literally flushed down the toilet. No joke.

I also voted for Prop 71. Yeah it was a LOT of money, but its a money you spend now that will EASILY benefit us in the future ---> That is smart fiscal sense in my opinion. That and i'm also studying to be a biomedical engineer at the moment so it won't be too bad that 3 billion goes straight to the private industry here ;)

But also, like the Children's hospital...i wanted to vote for it a lot...but ithe cost wasn't worth it...the interest was too high and although the stem cell bill we pay back twice what we loan, its an investment and it will do loads for our economy hopefully~ but the children's hospital had no return in that sense so i had to vote against...and even now i would...true it passed, and chances are i would support it if we weren't so in debt right now.

ntdz: if you were fiscally conservative you would be voting Libertarian, because this current republican party is NOT fiscally responsible. And now that they have another 4 years in washington, and control congress, I'll see whether or not they deserve my vote. But even then, they are prolly too scared to scrap some things~

I disagree with taxpayer funding of it but I do agree that stem cell research is important.

well if it's privately funded... it gets iffy because then corporations are destroying blastocysts for profit.

Heh, I disagree with many things being funded by taxpayers, not just stem cell research.

Hopefully Bush's efforts to push through a UN resolution to bar stem cell research worldwide will not foreclose this effort.

Thank you people of California, for making a farsighted and intelligent decision. I'm predicting that the financial returns to California will greatly exceed the original expenditures.
