I'm pretty noobish when it comes to computers. And I'm teaching here in Korea which made it even harder to get things. These forums and the advice that I got here really helped me figure out what to buy!!

**UltimaBoB 2006 Games Machine**

Please Note: Availability of all sorts of things was an issue so in some cases what I got was the best choice possible even if there are superior products in America

Motherboard: Asus P5W DH Deluxe

GPU: 2 x HIS ATI x1950XTX 512MB in Crossfire

HDD: 1 x Western Digital S-ATA 150 GB 10,000 rpm Raptor

Display: HP-P1230 Diamondtron Aperture Grille 22" CRT

(manufatctured 2005, received as new replacement from HP in early 2006 - 2 years of afterservice and warranty remaining! Its basically brand new!)

ODD: LG GSA H12N DVD RW/R Drive, 3.5" Floppy

Sound card: Creative X-fi Xtreme Fidelity

PSU: Enermax Libery 620 Watt

Mouse: Logitech G5 Laser Mouse

Keyboard: Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard

Speakers: Creative Inspire GD580 5.1 Channel surround sound system

Haven't recieved it and plugged it all in yet. Monitor arrives Friday.

But I am fairly sure from seeing other CRTs that it will be faster for games which is what matters to me.

Is it refurbished or overstock?

Earlier in 2006 he got it as overstock when he returned a defective HP-p1230 he had bought in 2005. The manufaturing date was in 2005 - HP said it was from the last run of aperture grille CRTs they had produced.

It has been used casually this year - but the business he had started and that he used the HP for was closed 6 months ago and that is why he doesnt need the monitor anymore.

I teach ESL in Korea. I'm in my third year here and so the cash starts to get pretty decent.

I have no TV or stereo - my Computer is all of that and more so I find it worthwhile to get a good one since I do play alot of games.

Total cost incl. monitor and taxes was ~$US 4,000.00 (contrary to popular belief computers aren't cheaper here than in America).

Hopefully I won't have to upgarde too soon.

Nice rig. Shouold blitz everything in the next year or so to come if not longer. My personal preference would be to go for a larger monitor for a crossfire setup to have a resolution of at least 1600x1200.

I couldn't find any LCDs I liked at 24" aside from possibly the ACer 223w - and I couldn't get that in Korea (shipping it would have been pricey).

Plus, I got basically a new 22" Mitsubishi Diamondtron latest edition CRT for $500 including delivery. I think that will make me happier for now than a slower LCD screen. Might upgrade in a year when 24" LCD are better and faster.

LCD's are no longer slow. in fact, they are better then CRT in some aspects:
Brighter
use less power
make less heat
better for the eyes cause there's no refresh rate
don't lose sharpness as they age.
also much smaller

that's a nice rig BTW but why not buy a mid level graphic card and then upgrade to DX10 when it comes out?

I found the Samsung 24" LCD and Dell 24" LCD both noticeably slower than a CRT in gaming - enough to bug me. I heard that the Acer was faster - but never got to see one.

LCDs are not slow - especially the 19" gamer-focused TN panels like the new Samsing 931c. They have come a long way. The 24" are a little behind the smaller ones I found - but still way better than a few years ago.

But as far as I am concerned the larger ones aren't quite there yet for gaming.

I plan to upgrade mobo and vid cards in like Q2 2007 after DX10 is decently matured and give these cards and mobo to my second computer.
