Thanking a Previous Employer

Well this past week I asked a previous employer (PhD) for a letter of recommendation. Last week I received a call out of the blue from a Professor in Florida asking me to participate in his research. I have to apply for a grant to get funding though which requires letter of recommendations, forms, official transcripts yada yada. So I'm very happy that he was able to write it in a short time period. What should I give him as a gift? Alcohol? I've got some vintage cacacha I brought back from Brazil. What do you guys think?
