Thank you for breaking into our storage units. Don't think we haven't noticed.

Now come back, bitch. We're waiting.

Oh yes. 😀

Edit, this thing is so cool. Apparently it's identical to the ones they put in squad cars. The resolution and frame rate are amazing. It keeps emailing me every time a neighbor comes home, though.

Any details besides the lame ebay link?

Nothing too exciting. We have some storage lockers along with the neighbors above our parking, some asswipe keeps coming back with a lock cutter and looting things. The cops don't seem to care so I wired this pup up with a nightvision camera to see what the deal is. Consider this a placeholder for some good video in the future. 🙂

So the unit does not even come with a camera? What does it do? Why can't you just hook up the camera to a regular VCR or even your computer? What kind of nightvision camera do you have?

It's hooked up to a sony color cam that's surrounded by infared leds similar to this one. It goes black and white at night and operates at 0 lux thanks to the leds. The advantages are it only records when there's activity in certain zones (the video comes up as a grid and you can choose what zone triggers recording and notification.) It also emails a snapshot and can store the feed elsewhere on the network, so even if it was stolen the video is safe. I can pull up a web browser and see out there in real time as well.

In a nutshell it gives me the opportunity to catch the fvcker that's been prowling around.

iwearnosox - Thanks for answering my questions. I really am interested and hope you don't think I was being rude or anything. Can you tell me more? The unit does all this? Can any color camcorder be used? How did you learn how to do the LED setup? Are the LED's subtle enough so the perp does not know they are being watched? I mean a bunch of dots coming from your second story bedroom window might be a giveaway. What else can it do?

So lemme get this right.... You paid 350 bucks for a VCR??

It's "get this straight", and no he didn't.

So lemme "get this straight".... He paid 350 bucks for a VCR with an ethernet jack on it?

If you're unable to discern the difference between this and a VCR it's almost not worth the time to explain it to you, to be honest. A device like this records activity only when its present, can store the activity external to the unit and notify the owner that something is occuring. You don't have to sit there and fast forward through hours of tape, nor worry about running out of storage space. It's just as good as pulling up a lawn chair and sitting there yourself 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Stop being dumb.

Did you read the damned auction? Call it what you want, all the fancy ass names dont change the fact its a specialized VCR. Its got a few cool little features, but at the end of the day it IS just a VCR. A VCR with a few cables.
Yes, its cool. I'd like to have one myself just for the "cool" factor but hell, take that plus your cost for cameras and the nightvision camera and you could do the same thing with a PC and webcams.

I will get a snapshot for you later on. The cool thing about a device like this is you can use any camera you want, with whatever features. The leds are infared so even though the storage spaces look dark they're actually brightly illuminated- the camera just switches to infared when it gets dark out automatically. The LED's are built into the camera, just browse fleabay and you'll see different manufacturers of them. It's all quite cool.

Edit: this one is also neat because it has dual channel audio, not too many security DVRs do. I can almost hear the sound of the bat on the guy's kneecaps now. 😀

The only thing a vcr and this thing have in common is that they record video. It's like comparing a bicycle and a car. They both could get you to work, right? So what's the difference? Why are you driving a car then, fool?

Fool? I'm not the one spending 350 bucks on a VCR!! 😛

Seriously though, I'm not asking to be dumb or a pain in the ass. I know Jack Sh!t about video survellence /security, so really have no idea what seperates this from a VCR except for the motion activated recording.

You can get the same functionality with a 4 input DVR PCI board. There is software that'll monitor for motion and it'll email you if you like. Not as nice as this stand alone unit but it's cheap. Like $30 or so.

Thanks for clearing things up for all of us, dickhead.

If you're too lazy or too stupid to read about this unit like I did, that's your problem, not mine.
