Thank god for the Xbox 360 Warranty.

So Friday my Xbox 360 gave me the dreaded 3 blinking red lights of death. The xbox 360 equivalent to the RSOD. I immediately called customer service since this was in fact my second Xbox 360. My first one was one of the dreaded 2005 production date 360's and it failed just as predicted.

Now here is the kicker, the replacement xbox they sent me due to the poorly manufactured one was also a 2005 production date. This means they essentially replaced my failed Xbox with one that was guaranteed to fail. Anyways I get customer service on the phone, and after spending a while giving her my information and serial number she informs me my warranty is out of date. So I begin to tell her that I knew my xbox was going to break since they replaced my faulty xbox with a faulty xbox with the exact problem of my original. The problem here however, is that this woman however was one of the least intelligent people I have ever spoken to in my life, because she seemed to be confused by pretty much any question I ask.

She then tells me, well we can send you a replacement xbox for 139 dollars, then you send us your old one, is this ok with you? I immediately say with my voice raised in a very serious manner:

"No this isn't ok, you are asking me to pay 140 dollars to replace something I knew was going to break. Basically you replace my bad 360 with a second bad 360, and suddenly I have to pay to fix it. I knew when I received this replacement I it would fail, now it has. If you had properly replaced my unit with one that wasn't known to be fault I wouldn't be in this situation. Now it has failed and im expected to pay for your mistake in sending me a bad Xbox to replace mine."

Next thing I know the line goes blank and a few seconds later she says,:

"Ok you will receive a new Xbox 360 free of charge in 3-5 business days, please ship your broken 360 back in the prepaid box. Sorry for your time."

Pretty much this woman, despite needing me to tell my story about 4 times, only finally responded properly to me getting hostile. Why is it customer service cant do what is right until someone starts to get angry. I told my story calmly, she ignores me and asks for 140 dollars. I tell it again angry and its free.

Cliffs:
My replacement Xbox 360 broke (2005 date)
Tell them they replaced broken one with bad one (also 2005 date)
They want 140 dollars to fix it
I tell them the story 3 times, still want 140 dollars, and seems too stupid to understand the conversation.
Tell the story one last time with a loud angry voice
Free Xbox 360 Replacement in 3-5 business days, with paid shipping each way.

I don't think it's guaranteed to fail. I've bought 2 2005 360s, one for myself and one for my brother, and both are still kicking fine.

Do you try to do 1080p on them, because that tends to be the straw that breaks their back. In fact my first one literally broke the day they added the 1080p patch and I switched it to 1080p.

The 2005 ones had a soldering problem, and for whatever reason 1080p eventually tends to cause a full hardware failure in the 2005 production date models, although the failure might result from 1080i/720p and lower resolutions eventaully. The 2006 and later models are supposedly fine.

Consider yourself lucky, the RMA process with Microsoft is like pulling hairs.

Why to this day, Im still holding out on getting a 360. Still to much of a if for me to spend $350 for the console, build up games for it to break, and have to keep replacing the damn console to get use out of the several hundred dollars I have wrapped up in the games for the system.

This is the reason why the pos2 is still a good seller, because of people replacing the ones that break leaving them with tons of games, and no working system, they have to buy another one or sell/throw away the games. When my pos2 breaks, I will be buying another one for I have a crap load of games for the system I and my boys like to play, and the pos3 wont be bwc fully, and play them all correctly, not to mention not about to shell out $600 for that system as of yet either, so I will be stuck replacing the console. My xbox 1 on the other hand, Im looking into maybe buying up some working used rigs, and storing them away, for when mine and my boys xboxes die.

Just for reference:

4/3 - MS Improves Warranty Service

Microsoft announced today it is improving the warranty for the Xbox 360 as well as adding new customer services.

"We recently announced that we changed the Xbox 360? warranty in the United States and Canada from 90 days to one year from the date of purchase. Now we're adding additional service enhancements, taking Xbox 360 customer service one step further."

The enhancements include Free Shipping, so when your console needs to be returned to Microsoft for repair your shipping costs are free; and Post-Service Warranty:

"If we repair your Xbox 360 within the original warranty period, you will receive either the balance of your original warranty, or 90 days, whichever is longer. In addition, we will now pay for the shipping both ways.

If we repair your Xbox 360 after the warranty period has expired, while you will be responsible for the repair costs, your repaired console will be returned to you with a new, one year repair warranty." original warranty, or 90 days, whichever is longer. In addition, we will now pay for the shipping both ways.

Additionally, Microsoft is implementing an expedited repair process that guarantees that upon receipt of the console, they will repair it and ship it to you within five business days. The company is also increasing the number of Xbox customer care representatives

Did you ever consider that the second '05 production date unit was refurbished? Most manufacturers that replace a unit due to warranty issueswill replace them with one that has been refurbished and checked out by the factory. You're probably going through all this hassle for no reason.

Lots of people have been reporting that the refurbs are ticking time bombs. Once you send in your original system, you're pretty much guaranteed to enter an endless cycle of replacements.

This is the main reason I hold off on buying an Xbox360 - the high failure rate..... I would be interested in see how many of you have either had no trouble and those of you who have had to replace it....

Had mine for one year now with no problems whatsoever. Mine is covered by MS warranty until April 2008, and I will extend the warranty before it hits that point. I also bought it at Costco for a little extra warranty :)

I know some people are having a lot of problems with the 360, luckily I have avoided them.

The 360 is the best gaming system I've ever had but in terms of hardware it is the absolute worst piece of electronics I've ever had.

You lucked up man. If I was the customer service rep and you fed me that crap about knowing your second one would fail from the day you got it I'd ask you why you didn't call at that point and ask for a newer one. You really weren't entitled to anything, though I can tell you think you were. You'll try to argue this point with me, but you'll fail (I already know that ;))

Haha, quite the way to put it! I don't own a 360 yet, but that seems to also be the feelings of my friends who have one.

I would try to argue my point with you.... if I cared enough ;)

Also, trust me you are much much smarter than the woman I was talking to. I honestly had to slow down everything I said and say it 3 times for even the dumbest questions, the woman was confused by every word I spoke.

My roommate's system died inside of a week, and this was a system that was purchased a month ago. Best Buy however didn't bat an eye when he brought it in to get a replacement. They even let him swap hard drives to keep all his saved games. He made sure to buy an extended warranty. My other friend had both his systems fail as well.

Not sure what everyone else's experience is, but out of all my friends, 75% of the machines have failed. Pretty terrible if you ask me.

If anyone is interested, I have a few of thee Xbox 360 Premium systems with the 3 rings of light. From what I hear you can send it back for repair for either free (with 90 day warranty), pay half price ($65) and get a free 1 year extended warranty or just fix it yourself.
I could do them for $125 each plus shipping for the Xbox 360 Premium console only, which is a steal.
PM if interested.

Thanks!
