Thailand Flood Leads to HDD Drought

low end ssd prices are not affected. but yeah the suppliers have totally bought up all the remaining good stock (enterprise sata especially).

Oh, I plan to use an SSD - but I am still looking into them. So I figure I will start with a 1 TB hdd and add the SSD shortly after - well, maybe a little longer now with the flood.

I found one on Amazon that had not been price gouged yet, so I ordered it. They are also limiting to one per customer. Didn't plan on buying one for a few more weeks, but I don't want to pay more for the same thing.

No cake for me - I'm more of a pie guy.

Holy crap are hdd expensive now. The Hitachi 3tb is now going for over $220. It was only $110 not long ago.

Prices have gone nuts in the UK. A 1TB drive used to be about £35, its now more like £100+

Availability is so bad I have yoyotech with an RMA drive that they can't replace and would prefer if I took a refund!

Tell them you want it refunded at current replacement value. They're trying to bone you!

It is just so hard to believe that people would take advantage of a bad situation for profit...

(hard to say that with a straight face)

😵 :hmm: 😡

They aren't. It's called supply and demand, and manufacturers are raising the prices, not the distributors.

In almost all industry, you sell based on replacement cost, not what you paid for a given item.

Am I saying there's no gouging going on? no, but it's not some mass conspiracy to fuck over the public.

I know, I know. It is just sour grapes on my end since it happens right when I am ready to build and had to make a quick decision on the hdd.

Believe me, I understand, and hate it more than you. I stand to lose 35-40% of my INCOME because of lost HDD sales. 🙁

I’ve been waiting for WD to ship 1 TB per platter 7200 rpm Caviar Blacks. This isn’t going to help at all.

so any ideas when prices will drop back to pre-flood levels? 2-4 months?

It might take forever. Remember hurricane Katrina? Gasoline prices never came back down. You can always make more money selling fewer for a higher price.

IMO, this will accelerate pushing SSD's into the mainstream. The SSD manufacturers won't waste this crisis.

WD is expecting 6-9 months for recovery. I expect prices will likely even remain high for some time after that. So maybe a year or so?

I am leaning toward 10-12 mo before we see ample stock like we used to, I don't think pricing will get down to where it was for quite awhile.
