TGS2009: Gran Turismo 5 joins Springpocalypse 2010

I think Forza 3 and PGR 4 basically proved that the two-year sequel cycle doesn't really work for racing games. Hopefully Microsoft will figure this out and give Turn 10 the appropriate time to come up with something a little more innovative, and not just kill the franchise (which is, IMHO, quite excellent).

On the plus side, it'll make an _excellent_ pack-in the next time they decide to go that route.

2008 actually, little more than a year and a half ago. But ya, GT5 has been "coming" way too long. There has to be a point where you have to say to hell with it and put it out, then start working on GT6. It's nice they are trying to shove so much into it, but I'm afraid that everything is going to end up half-baked. NASCAR integration is severely gimped and seems like a gimmick at this point, damage seems only be on a small group of cars at this point (last time I read, anyway).

I just checked. GT 5 Prologue came out in Dec 2007 in Japan, I was thinking about GT HD, which was 2006.

Gran Turismo is still better looking IMO. And with all the new physics and handling changes it will clearly be the superior simulation racer.

Well...we'll see, I'll have both. Compared to Prologue, Forza 3 has way better physics and handling so I do hope the changes really help.

And the Forza community stuff is unreal.

But GT5 might allow you to repaint your cars! Maybe even with custom colors rather than just factory colors!

I know a livery editor isn't a huge deal to a lot of people, but I always thought it was weird that GT games never even let you change the color of your car. It's one thing to not have a full-featured livery editor, but couldn't they at least have a paint shop?

Maybe not a flop, but pitiful compared to those GT4 sales. To be honest, I always enjoyed GT more than Forza.

Well, there are a lot of factors that led to that. I think "flop" can either be described as something that loses money or something that just doesn't meet expectations. I don't know how much Forza 3 cost to program and market, but I can almost guarantee Turn 10/Microsoft were not expecting the same level of sales as GT4.

Remember, GT4 was a much-anticipated sequel to one of the best-selling games of all time, and it was released when the immensely popular PS2 was really hitting its stride and had been out long enough for lots of people to have it. Forza, by comparison, is a relative newcomer to the racing genre on a platform that isn't as popular as the PS2 was.

What I find most amusing is that the entire Forza Motorsport franchise was released between GT4 and GT5.

GT4 - February 22, 2005
FM - May 3, 2005
FM2 - May 29, 2007
FM3 - October 27, 2009
GT5 - March, 2010 (???)

The full game use a completely different physics model then the demo? I was playing around with the demo on the kids 360, honestly thought it was a step back from the first Forza outside of better modeling of trail braking, in most ways it was quite a bit behind Shift honestly. I assume their has to be some mode in game that isn't in the demo that allows you turn physics modelling on? Oversteer seemed to be only possible with the hand brake(lift throttle mid turn front or rear engine pushes understeer?) and it seemed to be impossible to brake to late, even in the full on race car. Could be the demo is just really, really bad and the game is quite a bit better, certainly wouldn't be the first time we have seen that. I guess if you loot at it as a game it plays very smoothly, just nothing at all like a sim.

Maybe a GT: Barbie Edition? 🙂 I'm just old school, in any street car the last thing I want is to attract attention to myself(so much easier to travel when you don't scream 'ticket me' to every cop 😉 ).

I was talking about sales, I know it got good reviews. Yeah I guess it did flop.

Forza 3 was certainly not a flop, it was rather a big hit. In terms of overall sales nothing on the XBox has ever gone toe to toe with GT, that isn't a slam in any way. To date GT averages ~10Million copies sold per title released, that blows Halo out of the water by a long shot. Again, not picking on Halo, but in terms of series sales outside of a certain plumber nothing really is close to GT. This generation may end up being quite a bit different, but the odds of GT not outselling Forza are close to none. Inside the US they likely will be very close to Forza perhaps having the edge, in Japan(obviously) and Europe GT is still clearly the king of racing games.
