TGG Likes Linux......

After W2K constant crashes (even when i was reinstalling it)... I decided to try linux. .. while it did crash once while installing linux, the second time around it installed and now running fine.

This thing rocks!

I am slowly getting back to my old linux days.. things have so much improved since Slackware 2.0 or even later RedHat 5...

This thing detected everything I got, execpt my tv tuner, which it knows is in there, but i need to put drivers in.. I love it. Now only if its stable enough.... I can access my Fat32 Monster Drive (data) and so I am not in loss of data.. plus i got a W2K laptop that I can do my stuff from if linux cant do..

Weeeee....

i remember the first time i used linux. it was so different from windows having to use the command line and all. now it's just another os...for me to poop on!

What distro are you using?

I was planning on switching to linux, but then I realized most distros are really huge and I'm on 56k. So i need a small distro that's easy for me to learn linux.

(I am a newbie to it)

Also wondering if I'm willing to spend cash on mathematica for linux when I have it for windows. does linux allow me to run windows apps? (more specifically, mathematica..)

Darien,

Any number of forum members would snail mail you a set of Linux CDs of your choice (assuming you're in North America or perhaps even Europe). You can buy them very cheaply from any number of Internet vendors who sell copies of Linux distributions, sans support.

As far as Mathematica, I'd have to guess it wouldn't work so smoothly. Wine is an open-source project to get Winblows apps running under x86 *nix machines, but it's in perpetual alpha state. IMHO wine will (eventually) cover a meaningful set of popular applications, but will never be a general solution because reimplementing Win32 is pretty insane.

Darien, PM if you'd like for me to download, burn, and mail you a CD set for a distro you'd like to try.
