I may be getting my hands on an Acer X193WB at a very good price, but I'm having some last minute doubts. Should I be expecting noticeably poorer IQ (baseline quality, colour accuracy, ghosting) due to it being VGA as opposed to DVI?

The monitor will be connected to a 6800 GT, built by EVGA. I have no clue as to the quality of its RAMDAC, which as I understand it, is an important factor in determining the IQ.

Ah, I got the X193WB+ with a 1680x1050 resolution. Most of the time I use the DVI port but I was forced to use the VGA port for two weeks because of VGA replacement. The DVI in my opinion shows some improvement over VGA but nothing big.

I did have a problem where the screen was off the monitor a tad but I think that is because I was using an ultra old Radeon 7000 PCI.

Define "improvement". You gotta give me something tangible here.

Are we talking better colours? Less ghosting? What?

Better colors and clearer/crisper picture with DVI. I don't think ghosting will be affected. I run two Dell 2007FP screens side-by-side at work, and one is on DVI the other on VGA. You can definitely tell the difference.

Personally, I'd be suspect of an LCD that doesn't have a DVI in the first place. These screens are usually very low end.

I would rather DVI as well, but I'm getting this monitor for less than half what it normally costs. My desktop (see sig below) needs a monitor! And I'm on a budget, so this fits the bill methinks.

Most Acer monitors have an "auto" button that will re-adjust the screen when using the VGA input.

I think part of it also depends on the monitor and the quality of the portions dealing with the VGA input. I had a CTX 17" LCD with VGA and DVI, and the VGA input on it was really crappy because you can easily see the difference. However, I also had a 19" Acer with VGA only, and it was easily as good, if not a hair better than the CTX using DVI.

Turbonium, unless you do side-by-side comparisons, I don't think you'll notice a huge difference.

The picture seems a little crisper to me but that is about it.

DVI generally sharpens everything a bit and makes text a little better.

as others have said, it depends on the quality of the analog input. my first LCD was a samsung that had great VGA quality. my current gateway does not.

Here's to hoping it has a good VGA input.

But I guess at 70USD, I can't really go wrong.
