TF2 server list refreshing causes my router to die

I have a linksys WRT54G V2.0 (old, yes...). I have the newest firmware available through linksys, however, when I try to play Team Fortress 2 through steam I lose internet connection during the servers refreshing.

I can, at this point, plug my computer directly into my wall (wired, shared "high-speed" ethernet in my condo) and will be back online. I have to wait about 15 minutes or so to plug the router back in for it to work.

Is my router getting flooded? Is it a problem with Steam? With TF2?

i had this problem with other valve games and no idea what caused it. one day there was a steam update and it magically worked after that.

happened to my WRT54GL too, it reboots whenever i refresh BF2. i think this router just can't handle too many half open connections (not like it can handle concurrents well anyway)

if you have DDWRT there are time out settings that you can adjust to help with the problem, but a better solution is to get the good D-Link routers.

Interesting. Since yesterday I cannot refresh the server list in steam with seagate firewall running even when I have all applications set to allow. Now when I click "allow all traffic" then the server list will refresh. I'm also running a through router and have peerguardian running but they don't seem to be causing any issues.

I think the thread title needs to be changed to "steam firewall issues" to attract more attention.

no, the good ones are DGL-4300(older gen) or DIR-655, or anything uses the same chipset in them. ask this question in networking might give you better response as what's really going on with the WRT45GL that cause it to fail.
