TF2 Question

I've never played a Steam game online before and I just picked up TF2 recently. I've played it a bit but I've noticed that on the server list there is only 1 server per map/game type with icons but after those there are a bunch of other servers with no map icon. What's the deal? What are the other servers?

Also, does it take everyone else a long time for the server list to refresh? I swear it takes up to a minute for it to finish refreshing, and then I have to wait another minute for it to connect. Maybe I'm just spoiled by COD4.

There are also some servers that start with ACHIEVEMENT. What are these?

Uncheck the Show map list button at the bottom. This will give you a more classic server browser.

I clicked it before but for some reason I switched it back. That list is a lot better. Thanks. I thought it was kind of weird that there were only 3 payload servers.

It took me a few days to figure that out when they made the original change too. Achievement servers are setup so that you can get the achievements in short order. It usually requires some cooperation from other people (like have somebody be a heavy that is always eating a sandwich for the scout achievement).

Ahhh, the heavy. "So much blood!" "We must push little cart!"

I can't get in TF2 for some reason it seems really annoying. Maybe you got to play a while before you like it.

The servers that start with "Achievement" are for douchebags who can't handle getting their achievements in an actual competitive environment, they need them sugar coated and stuffed down their mouth.

Yep I could care less what anyone thinks. I always go to achievement servers cus I'm not an achievement whore and just want the new weapons to be able to use them cus some of them really are cool.

I didn't like it at first either. I'm about 10 hours into it and it's getting more fun. One thing that kind of bothers me though is that it seems like all the characters have more disadvantages than advantages so every one of them seems like a poor choice.

I don't get what you're saying.

Every character is different and how ever you want to play, they have the class for it. In the beginning you won't know how to effectively use a class but you'll get it.

it's basically rock paper scissors. the only class that doesn't really have a counter is the sniper- your team simply has to have equally good snipers to counter the enemy.

problematic spies are lit up by pyros. in a head-on fight, pyros are meat for heavies and soldiers. who, along with demo really need medic and engie support to be successful.

the classes all have different roles and it will take some time to figure out how they all must intertwine to make a successful team. if your team sucks, you will probably suck. i.e. medics getting killed by scouts or engies being taken out by spies doesn't mean that those classes are weak, it means someone else on the team is not doing their job.

I like to play engineer but I get raped by spies, then people bitch about how there's no teleporters or sentries. So I just gave up and now play Sniper/Soldier.

remember that the better the place you build, the more likely your team is to protect it. pyros aren't going to backtrack to spycheck your sentry, but if it's as a critical choke point, heavies, pyros and the like will stick close to it for ammo and health. ideally, a large server needs at least one pyro on constant spycheck, otherwise the only way to control spies it to control the choke points (and even then they can still slip through).

You're doing it wrong.

But more seriously, it's probably just because you're new. And what dis/advantage are you talking about.

edit: for spies, you kinda have to realize them before they get to your sentry, or get a crit with your wrench, or shoot them with the shotgun as they approach.
