11:00 at night. I wouldn't call a person that late at night. But is it ok to text someone that late? I'm thinking they'll have their phone off, or at worst it's just a short sound that wouldn't wake a person up. But I'm a caveman that doesn't have a cell phone, so I don't know what is the social norm in this case.

What say ye.

if i dont wanna get texts or calls late at night, I turn off my phone.

If you dont get a response from me, it means fuck off.

It matters to me - but it seems not to matter to my friends. I would not text anything work related during common sleeping hours... and I generally don't text friends unless I have reason to believe that they're awake, or that they need to be awake.

Then again, I text FAR less than nearly everyone I know, mostly related to the above. o_o This despite wanting everyone else to be comfortable texting me 24/7. Why isn't this a solved problem?

Depends on who your texting.

If I don't feel like being disturbed I just turn the ringer off.

I'm on-call 24/7 so I have to leave my phone on for texts for late-shift workers, but my family & friends know not to call or text after 8pm (which is when I try to go to bed since I wake up early).

So, it depends on the person. If it's social sure, because they can get back to you at any time & it's their fault if they don't turn off the ringer at night. Plus most people stay up late anyway, so whatever.

This is what I was thinking. I kinda equate it to sending an email. Though I imagine if someone hears their phone beep, curiosity will drive them to see who it is. I wouldn't do it for work, since I would be seeing them the next day anyway.
I feel like it should be ok, but I'm still not going to do it, just in case.

I would say the same etiquette applies as with phone calls. There's not much difference that I can see.

Well majority of friends that I text late at night have phones on vibrate. So not an issue about waking them or anyone with them at any hour of the day.

I mostly treat text like email, I don't really care when people text me. Though I know some people have all sorts of loud notifications so I try to avoid texting people late at night just in case, but really if people don't want texts at night then they should turn off notifications or use something that is not as loud/long.

Mine just emits a very faint sound, enough that I'll probably hear it if I'm next to my phone and awake but if I'm sleeping I wont hear it at all.

If I don't know that the person is OK with random time texts, I don't send them outside of normal awake times.

Some people have not yet discovered the fact that their phone can have its ringer and vibrator turned off.

Or they don't want to miss the latest important update on Facebook. "Oh look at that, it's a puppy with a coffee cup on its head! I'm so glad that my phone woke me up, otherwise I might have had to wait to see it until I was driving to work in a few hours."

But I suppose some people might need to keep it turned on if they're on-call or something like that.

Texts are the same as Email to me, send at any hour and I'll get back to you when I can. If it's mission critical you better call.
