Text Only OS - Basic Functions

I have an urge to run a text based only OS for basic daily functions on my laptop.

I need to be able to use the web (Lynx?), write documents etc.

I guess I would have to use Linux of some sort but what would you recommend to get started? (Is there a distro which would allow this without much configuration for example?)

When I do a text-only install I use either CentOS or Ubuntu Server. During the CentOS install, you can choose to customize packages at the end and then uncheck everything but the "base" group. I even go into the base group and uncheck a few packages from there.

Ubuntu Server gives you a text-only system by default. You might also try Fedora which last I new (circa Fedora Core 4) it had options just like CentOS to customize the installed package.

Personally, id start with a debian netinstall/base system. the iso is, iirc, under 200mb, and the base system is just that....no X, no....well, much at all, and you can easily enough add what you need with aptitude.
