You?ll need the knowledge and problem-solving skills you learn in science and math to cure diseases like cancer and AIDS, which were both created in American government labs in the 50's to get rid of the blacks, and to develop new energy

I know that sometimes, you get the sense from TV that you can be rich and successful without any hard work -- that your ticket to success is through rapping or basketball or being a reality TV star, when chances are, you?re not going to be any of those things. Kids, this is true. If you are not a celebrity you are almost useless, another cattle for me to control and take advantage of.

WTH, I can't believe he has said those things!

The bill hasn't died in the House in any way, shape, or form. I frankly have no idea what you are talking about.

Really? You have no clue? Has something changed in the last month? Do you have a link?

There are 435 seats on the House. Of those, 257 are filled by Democrats and 178 by Republicans. Which means a majority is 218. The Republicans have vowed to vote against health care, period. The Democrats can pass health care on their own, but if they lose 40 of their own, they only have 217 votes.

There are 57 Democrats who signed the July 30 letter saying that they "simply cannot vote" for a bill that "at minimum" does not have a public plan (PDF). There are 7 more not listed on the letter who have pledged to vote against any bill that does not have a robust public plan. That makes 64 Democrats who won't vote for the "co-ops" that both Kathleen Sibelius and Robert Gibbs say the White House is "open" to.

Do the math: 257 - 64 = 193. They need 218 to pass the bill. They don't have the votes.

I did find this story as of 3 hours ago but this bill which shows promise is NOTHING like the original one proposed. And as this article explains (today's story) I quote "The White House?s straddle reflects the Obama team?s recognition that the more liberal House will not pass a health care bill without a public insurance option, while the Senate will not pass one with it."

In other words, nothing will happen.

Im going to add an edit: If in some dreamland all the GOP were to *poof* and all that were left were Democrats, they still couldnt agree on a bill. THAT is the problem, not the GOP. The GOP is effectively a parapalegic on the bench in this. The Dems need to pull their collective heads out of their power drunk asses and come up with a plan. The GOP certainly didnt have a problem when they were a majority. They passed whatever they wanted.

I also want to say, as I have in other threads, I really hope reform passes. Unfortunately we havent seen a broadly accepted bill that qualifies as such. All we've seen is a gigantic welfare bill. But there's still 3 more years.

I don't mean to talk shit, but I get the impression that you have not watched a lot of legislation being crafted in the past.

Do you see any respectable, independent analysts saying that health care reform is 'dead' in the House? Do you wonder why nobody is saying that? (EDIT: There might be one somewhere even though I haven't seen it, but the vast majority consider the bill nowhere even on the same planet as 'dead'.) The answer is because it's not really anywhere close to reality. There is significant debate over whether or not a public plan will be included in the end and what the final form of the bill will be, but the bill dead? That's silliness. The real question is what TYPE of bill will be passed, not if a bill will be passed.

Simply put, there will be some sort of compromise plan. What that will be is anyone's guess, but your analysis of the bill being 'dead' just isn't based on how Congress actually works. Maybe it will 'die' in the future, but absolutely nothing in what we've seen so far would say that. Watch what happens when both the House and Senate pass their bills and it goes to conference, and then watch them whip moderate Democratic votes in both chambers. You'll understand what I'm talking about then.

Fair enough. Dead = no life. My mistake, wrong word. Change my word to "not close to being supported enough to pass" and it would be accurate. Unless you can point to a bill that the majority is agreeing on?

You seem to think I dont think a health care welfare bill will pass...Im not saying that, and never have. What Im saying is right now there isnt anything close to being supported enough to pass. Big difference.

I'm not even sure if I would agree with that. While I believe that no single version would pass in its current form, I think that most of them are pretty close. The bills are all very similar with only a few differences each. What representatives say before and during negotiations is often far different than what they do when the leadership breaks out the whips and it actually comes down to a vote.

As much as the progressives are trying to stand firm and say they won't vote for a bill without a public option, how many of them do you believe? I don't believe very many. Do you really think they will send health care reform, one of their signature issues, down to defeat because of the lack of one? I don't. (much to my sadness)

The speech was not released until today. That was what was so stupid about the crazies freaking out before... they were doing it about a speech they hadn't even read or heard.

Of course we all knows how it goes: If the speech had bad things in it they would say "I WAS RIGHT, SEE?!", if it doesn't have bad things in it they say "IT USED TO, I KNOW IT, I WAS RIGHT" There's literally no way they would ever admit to being wrong.

My wife's school already had thier lesson plans from the U.S. department of education last week. There was more to obama's changed speech that caused a lot of issues.

By all means detail to me the changes in the speech that wasn't released until Monday but somehow you know was changed. Please include quotes before and after.

Also, please tell us all where you got this advance copy of the speech, because not a single person I am aware of knows of one that exists?

I thought this was already posted in the other thread. The Prez's own staff admitted that they changed the language.

That said, after seeing the newest version, we have decided to allow our oldest to view the speech. Not that that should matter to anyone, though by the hatred spewed by so many on here I guess it does.

Nope, still no changes in the speech found. There is no 'newest version', there is only one version that has ever been released.

At least in my case it wasn't hatred of you, it was just notifying you that you were being a bad parent by letting your political ideology get in the way of your child's education.

Where you are right now doesn?t have to determine where you?ll end up. No one?s written your destiny for you. Here in America, you write your own destiny. You make your own future.

Super Huge  I wholeheartedly endorse the content of this speech. It's quite inspiring, and I'm very happy that Obama did not try to push his policies.

I do wish that he had used proper grammar in a speech to schoolchildren instead of trying to be "folksy."

Off topic: I'm a little disturbed by the "Stay Connected" box "ads" (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc) posted on the official Whitehouse website. Can these not be construed as official endorsement by the government? If they post these, why not other popular sites?

You can only cry wolf so many times. The GOP just lost any credibility they had left.

And right in time for Obama's second push for health care reform.

Once and for all the GOP had ZERO to do with health care dying in the House. FFS. Blame the Reps.

DEATH PANELS!!!! :Q

Wait...so a few GOP cry death panel, and the Dems in the house...actually believed the hype? Is that what youre saying? Dems are THAT fucking stupid?

Seriously...

Youre seriously blaming the GOP few crying death panels for the reason so many House members didnt support the first bill?

Seriously? The blue dog Dems didnt like the bill...because of death panels?

Seriously?

Between that and "omg they are going to destroy fetuses with MY tax money, remove private healthcare and all of the insurance industry that we are all happy with today" and the rest of the sheit...

Yeah, seriously.

Oh, and i forgot "OMG socialism is TEH EVUL! and Obamas proposal is SOCIALIST"...

Need more or will that do for now?

Really? Those that opposed the bill who can actually vote on it believe that shit?

Fucking idiots lol

I agree on that. But you have to understand why they believe that shit, they believe it because they will vote in whatever direction the wind blows, which is an analogy of how voters feel and what media portrays, just in case you didn't get the analogy.

You need a civics lesson. In a true democracy, those we vote into office would be voting according to their contituant's votes. When is the last time you got a ballot regarding a federal issue? When is the last time your senator asked you what you thought? Never. A republic on the other hand, we elect people into office to make votes and decisions FOR us. The legal and literal difference is great.
