Text messaging... Why does media keep telling me that it's actually being used?

I have noticed that there's a lot of commercials lately advertising text messaging like it's somehow better than a phone call. Then, the news article in this thread mentions it like it's the sole reason movies are doing bad.

Is it just me, or does NO ONE IN THE WHOLE FVCKING WORLD USE TEXT MESSAGING? (I mean in regard to cell phones..) Who the hell takes 10 minutes to say one sentence on a cell phone over taking 1 minute to make a call?

I use txt msging when I know the person I want to say something to can't take a call. It doesn't take long to write something if you have the dictionary turned on and you've got a little practice.

I don't think it's widespread though.

I use it all the time. Extremely useful. If you have a crappy phone (no T9) or service (Sprint for instance, they don't use real SMS, just a web portal) then I admit it's not very convenient.

My mom has only received one text message (from my uncle), and she didnt even want it becuase we have to pay for them. SO yeah, i dont see a lot of text messaging going on.

Correct.

That is because we do not get unlimited calls and our monthly call plans are crap.

I don't text much as I can't be assed. I'd rather call the person and then I'm on a half decent monthly plan. Still sucks to call other carriers though 🙁.

Oh yeah lots of people are on PAY AS YOU GO so it is cheaper for them to txt instead of call if it it something small.

i use text messaging all the time...but then again i have a mini keyboard on my phone so its nice and quick =). i pay like ~$4 a month for 300 messages a month. i use about 200-250 a month~.

btw my phone is a nokia 6800

I like text messages, its a quick note that doesn't make someone have to answer their ringing phone and talk to you. Its less intrusive to me to receive a text message, much like email.

I doubt SMS will ever be as popular here as in other countries as long as talking on the phone remains so cheap. I think I've maybe used text messaging once in my entire life.

My family and I use text messaging A LOT...maybe it's why Cingular stopped giving us free unlimited text messaging. Now there's a limit of 300 per month.

People here can't even drive while talking on their cellphones... how much more when they're typing out letters on those little buttons. 😀

text messaging will probably survive and thrive only in the business world. I use it solely for convenience really. For instance, if I am in the city and want to know who's free to chill, instead of calling people 1 by 1, I send an email to a mailing list I set up with their phones and my email instantly gets distributed. Reading text is also much faster than checking my voicemail. Also, if I need to get in touch with a group of people at work, emailing their phones is really convenient. And when people want to reach me, they can email me cuz my email gets forwarded to my phone in addition to my computer.
