basically looking for any information about any programs or web services that accept text messages.

this is for a conference situation where participants can send a text message to a number and the messages will be readable on a laptop that the speaker has in front of him.

something like "text your questions or comments to 74585"

help me out here AT 🙂
 
Yahoo Messenger allows this. You will first have to send a message to the person's phone from Yahoo Messenger to see the number for your Yahoo account. Once you have that number, you can always send texts to it, and they will come up in Yahoo Messenger just like they were from another Yahoo account. I used to use it to send myself notes when I was in school.
