Text message spam should be illegal

Papa John's sent me a text message advertising some pizza deal - 10 cents
I replied with STOP to opt out of future messages - 10 cents
They sent a confirmation text back - 10 cents

I know its only 30 cents, but I still shouldn't have to pay not to receive spam.

Edit: Apparently it didn't cost me anything

I forgot I had unlimited texting too (I never send texts, its part of the unlimited internet plan). But the point I made is still valid that it CAN cost people money.

Pretty sure it is illegal for the same reason fax spam is illegal.

Can't say that without knowing how much he texts. Doesn't make much sense to pay for 500 texts a month if I only use 10, and doesn't make sense to disable them entirely if I use 10 a month.

Are you sure that you didn't sign up for text message notifications with Papa Johns?

That sucks though...

I pay 15 cents per text msg, I usually incur about 4$ per month in fees due to my usage (not enough to get a 5$ plan). In any case, when I got spam, I called tmobile, told them about it, and they gave me 50 free text msgs to use within 3 months.

This crap is why I have texting disabled on my phone...EVERY time I turn texting on, I get 5-10 per week, all advertising some kind of garbage or website, with a return number of 000-000-0000. Every one cost me a dime. YES, unless you have a texting package, you pay for incoming and outgoing texts.
Fuckin spammers.

Lying would be intentionally giving us false information. OP genuinely believed he was charged for the texts until he realized otherwise.

Still though, he makes a valid point. I don't see why receiving a text should cost money, especially if it's something you don't really have control over.

I'm with Virgin, and I'm pretty sure I don't pay for incoming, and I don't have a texting package

After Sprint did it, I'm pretty sure every major wireless carrier raised their rates to 15 cents per message. Now Sprint made it 20 cents!
