Text and calling from an iPad to a cell phone

My kids have iPad 2's and I would like to getnthem and app to send and receive texts and calls if possible to my phone
 
Google voice is the obvious and free solution for texts.

Not sure how calls would work... maybe skype if it's available on ipads?
 
Skype will work for calling. There isn't an iPad version yet, but you can use the iPhone version until it comes out.
 
Second Google Voice for texts, and Skype as well.

Am a big fan of GV... I dropped the text package on Verizon and save some $ using Google Voice.
