mexican "district"? this whole city is a mexican "district." except chinatown.

unless you mean ninfa's on navigation or maybe el jardin.

and the mexican here is authentic tex mex, not authentic mexican. so if you're expecting interior mexican you're likely to be disappointed.

I dunno about Houston, but I know that despite the huge amount of tex mex places there are a select few really good interior mexican food joints to be found in Austin. That has to be true in Houston as well.

there's Hugo's, which is amazing. but it's probably out of the OP's price range and certainly not in a mexican "district." pico's mex mex on bellaire might also be a good pick. though i've only had the fajitas which are decidedly not mex mex. otilia's on long point is also interior mex, but that area is decidedly korean. there's a bunch of hole in the wall joints on bissonnet just west of bellaire city (so, past renwick) which claim to be from mexican states but i've not had any of their food. that area's pretty mexican. there's mexican sea food joints on airline which might fit the OP's description.

Last time we were in SA, we went to see some caverns pretty close by. I forget the name but it was pretty good. Sure someone from Texas can fill in the details.

Probably the Natural Bridge Caverns. I live about 4 miles away from them. They're cool (and very humid year round). There's also a drive through wildlife zoo on the same plot of land run by the same people.

Salt Lick BBQ is easily one of the best around although Rudy's isn't bad either.

If you haven't been to SA yet, you have to check out the Riverwalk.

My wife and I ate at a "real" mexican place close to frys on the north end of town.

If anyone wonders if they are eating at a "real" mexican restaurant, walk in, sit down, and ask the server if they have goat meat.

1 - if the server understands English, you are probably not at a real Mexican restaurant.

2 - if they do not serve goat, you definitely are not at a "real" mexican restaurant
