Is there any particular reason that there are so few speed limit signs in Texas? In PA, you'll usually see a speed limit sign right after each onramp, but here you have to go a LONG way before you know how fast you can go without getting pulled over

When in doubt on a highway, cruise at 68 or so. If it's 70, you're not too slow to piss anyone off, if it's 60 or 65 you're not going to fast to be pulled over. You only have 75 MPH on rural, infrequently traveled roads.

I generally cruise about 8 MPH over. Haven't had a problem with it yet. But Texas troopers will get you every time you break the 10 MPH+ mark, so I'd err on the side of caution as several highways go from 70, to 60, to 65 when there are no apperant changes in your surroundings,
 
In Texas I drive always 5 under the speed limit. 😛 J/k, I usually just obey speed limit unless a pack of cars are traveling a little faster. My car can't handle high speeds though (1987 Toyota Cressida).

That's another thing I noticed - a lot of people do actually follow the speed limit. Of course, unlike in PA, the speed limit is usually reasonable 😉.

They really do suck here.
 
Most people in Houston, save those on a few select streets (Bissonnet), drive about five miles per hour over the posted speed limit on surface streets, though it's not at all uncommon for a lot of people to drive 50 in a 35 on some of the larger roads. On the freeway, you get people driving anywhere from the posted 60 to 80, with most of them cruising along at a little under 70.

Me? I drive 40-45 on surface streets assuming there's little traffic and a clean 70 on the freeway. Works out nicely. Of course, YMMV. Oh, and please don't speed through neighborhoods. It's very rude and unsafe!

Unless the speed limit is 55, in that case you're screwed :beer:

Most of the highways in Oregon are 55 because they all wind up/down/through hills and mountains and there are very few long flat stretches (except for some areas out in the east side of the state). It also rains a lot here during the winter and spring so they tend to keep the speed limits low. considering how bad drivers are out here I think it's a good thing. you are however generally safe driving 10 mph over the speed limit without getting in any trouble (assuming the roads are dry).

Texas is one of the few states that has a seperate "Night" speed limit too. Gotta drive 5MPH slower at night.

That totally depends on the highway, that definitely is not the case for all the ones near/around me.
 
On 65 mph highways, the magic number is 74 mph. This is the fastest you can go without worrying about being pulled over. I estimate that I have (hypothetically speaking of course 😀 ) been clocked probably over 200 times doing this speed and never ever got pulled over nor a ticket for it.
