Hey guys... I made this movie back in May, as a final project for my RTF 318 class (Introduction to Image and Sound). I have been passing copies to almost anyone I know - and it has just now struck me odd as to why I have neglected to post a link to it in the Anandtech forums, where I have been lurking and learning about computing for oh so many years now. Right click below, save-as to download it.

*TEXAS-SIZED LAN TOURNEY*

Details: This is a 4 minute documentary about a big LAN party thrown by the two PC Gaming clubs at the University of Texas at Austin back in April of this year (the 17th I believe?). All sorts of games were played, but most systems were running UT 2004 practically the entire time. They even set up a tournament between the 2 organizations, which I caught on video and used to wrap up the 2nd half of this, my first film.

I have begun an intensive and critical study of media/production at UT and I am extremely proud to be where I am. However, this a smy first work is not perfect... if you want to pick it apart through strict documentary and cinematic standards it might not stand as 1st class work, haha... but you know what I am still proud of it. It's funny and flows well through an introduction to LAN gaming to the final showdown at the end and I feel like I captured some great footage, giving the uninformed viewer a decent idea of why we love to LAN so much.

I am extremely interested in the opinions if anyone who sees this, was actually at the party... of course they will be quick to notice my creative editing through the actual tournament - all I will say is this was my first time to record and edit as much video as this and some glitches happened, lots of footage was lost.... I made do though:) Anyone who wasn't there, wouldn't notice;)

Well there you have it! I invite you to view my first movie and even critique it, so long as it's all constructive criticism and/or generous praise

what's the best way to compress it? I wanted to encode it into divx... but could not figure out how.. what else is good? .avi, .mpg were both bigger when I tried...

avi with DivX or XviD would have been better then Sorenson with quicktime. Even mpeg-4 would have been smaller with quicktime.

The easiest way I have found to encode videos is to render the movie uncompressed and then run it through VirtualDub selecting the compression of choice.

wow

i really do not miss going to lan parties and i am becoming more and more embarassed of ever attending them.

lol

anyways...im not going to pick your project apart or anything (unless you actually wanted constructive criticism/advice) but you have a long way to go man. Its gets pretty dull and more like an expose on a bunch of nerds in the dark. Also, you do not touch at all on why you/they like to LAN, the uninformed viewer is lost in a sea of nerdy jargon, monitors with unsynced refresh rates and lifetime virgins.

but anyways, props to you for making a movie. Im sure you are proud. Stay in school though, and dont call yourself a director quite yet

;)

hehehe.... it's funny, this project taught me that I actually do not want to be a director ;) shoot, it's not easy...

it was fun though

BTW, I got a B on the project as well as final grade for the class. it will let me move on to upper division production courses where I can find something to specialize in that I do best...

wanna know what would have been great? If the voiceover was one of those guys that does the voice for horror movie trailers or something, you know, with a lot of base...also, at the very end, why does it say "for now???" What question are you asking? they won, how are they not the champions for now? That might be getting a little nitpicky though, oh, and nice job getting a shot of a girl in the background. I was beginning to get sad at the guy to girl ratio, atleast there was one...

when the hell did ACM become a gaming organization? i mean, they always had the lan party but it blew. BBQ was much better.

<--- his roommate ran and may still run the ACM
