In a state where teen pregnancy and teen motherhood is at the higher end of the spectrum, there are parents in Texas who do not want their middle-school kids to learn or even know about sex in middle-school. If this was New York State, where teen pregnancy and teen motherhood is low, and where I was taught about sex-ed in high school only, I can understand. With this parental behavior in Texas, with the new abortion law in that state, I can only expect teen pregnancy and motherhood rates sky rocketing in Texas.

Further more, this parent does not seem to understand that teaching or learning about anal sex in literally "teaching or learning" about something. The book "Out of Darkness" where anal-sex was referenced, which was available in two middle-schools, has been removed from the schools and is now undergoing review.

In the last 12 months I've checked out and read over 1200 books to my daughter from our library, and have noticed a lot of puritan bias there too, which is ridiculous.

Na I really don't have a huge issue with it. But I don't think it's extreme for someone to have a problem with it. I just think It's not really middle school appropriate. I have no issues or qualms about sex.

I gave my son the full sex talk much earlier than most do. Being Texas I'm sure he'll bring it up at school and piss off some parents

Also the vast majority of middle schoolers have hit puberty and I hope the first time they are hearing about sex isn't from page 39 of some random book no one has ever heard of until this lady go a chain letter and flipped out.

Just like I don't see a difference in the young kid section of a city library and a grade school library. Any kid can walk into a city library and check out any book, just like the school library.

It's true, there is no way to prevent every child every time from reading something you may think is inappropriate. Children vary in their motivation and degrees of access, and parents vary in their degrees of vigilance. This doesn't strike me as a good argument for why this particular book should be in a middle school library.

After all, 9 year olds can pretty easily access porn on the internet. Should we allow porn in grade school libraries?

They are reading and talking worse outside of school. If you think that isn't true, you are kidding yourself. What's important in is to know what your kids are reading, and have discussions about it. Sheltering them from reality is more harmful and invites them to learn the wrong lesson/message from someone else, which will invite bigger problems.

Middle school is not too young to be talking about this stuff, as middle school is ages 10 to 14. 11 is the average age girls start puberty. So 10 on is exactly the right time to start talking about this stuff, even if some of the topics are uncomfortable.

That title pulls multiple books on Amazon, wasn't sure which one it was. Didn't think a book about three 30s would say corn holed in it.

I'm personally much more concerned with books with racist undertones or pushing religious BS, both of which are prolific in libraries. For "corn holed" to mean anything to a kid they'd have to already know what anal was or look it up. A Google search doesn't bring up porn, either.
