In a state where teen pregnancy and teen motherhood is at the higher end of the spectrum, there are parents in Texas who do not want their middle-school kids to learn or even know about sex in middle-school. If this was New York State, where teen pregnancy and teen motherhood is low, and where I was taught about sex-ed in high school only, I can understand. With this parental behavior in Texas, with the new abortion law in that state, I can only expect teen pregnancy and motherhood rates sky rocketing in Texas.

Further more, this parent does not seem to understand that teaching or learning about anal sex in literally "teaching or learning" about something. The book "Out of Darkness" where anal-sex was referenced, which was available in two middle-schools, has been removed from the schools and is now undergoing review.

I actually love the fox news comments on the story from fox readers. To call them troglodytes would be an insult to cavemen. Several extemely recommending home schooling, someone claiming fascism occurred when they cut that ladys mic, and one cheeky character wanting to basically recreate Kristallnacht style book destruction with the libraries in their county.

From what I can tell she was upset about a anal sex passage. I'll be honest I wouldn't want my kid reading this... And I don't think I've ever backed up fox news lol....

"Take her out back, we boys figured, then hand on the titties, put it in her cornbox, put it in her cornhole, grab a hold of that braid, rub that calico," Bell recited to the board Wednesday night. "You can find that on page 39 of the book called, 'Out of Darkness,' which you can find at Hudson Bend Middle School and Bee Cave Middle School."

Yeah me too. This might well be the first time I've agreed with one of these people who think certain school library books are inappropriate. I wouldn't want a 12 year reading that passage.

No idea what the rest of the book is like. But I am going to guess that most kids that get to page 39 aren't going to be the naive ones that don't know about this already or would be harmed by it.

@Dulanic and @woolfe9998 would you have an issue with this book at a regular library? Or it just that is in a school library as opposed to the juvenile section of a city library?

In the last 12 months I've checked out and read over 1200 books to my daughter from our library, and have noticed a lot of puritan bias there too, which is ridiculous.

Do you really think this book will be the difference between a middle schooler having sex vs not?

No problem in a regular library. Might even be fine for high school. Middle school children are too young to be reading that.

I could just as easily ask you if you think it should be OK in a grade school library. Somewhere in there is an age cutoff.

Na I really don't have a huge issue with it. But I don't think it's extreme for someone to have a problem with it. I just think It's not really middle school appropriate. I have no issues or qualms about sex.

I gave my son the full sex talk much earlier than most do. Being Texas I'm sure he'll bring it up at school and piss off some parents

Confused what the issue is here - age-appropriate books or sex education in schools?
Two-different things, surely?

Though if they had the second the first would probably be less of a problem.

I know nothing about the book, and the title is used a lot so I couldn't find it on Amazon. I'd say it'd depend on the rest of the book and if it was written as a pre-teen book.

Also the vast majority of middle schoolers have hit puberty and I hope the first time they are hearing about sex isn't from page 39 of some random book no one has ever heard of until this lady go a chain letter and flipped out.

But I really don't see the difference in a juvenile section of a city library and a middle school library. Just like I don't see a difference in the young kid section of a city library and a grade school library. Any kid can walk into a city library and check out any book, just like the school library.

We also live in a world where WAP is played on the radio.

Young kids don't usually walk into city libraries without parental supervision. School libraries are a different story.

Surprised you can't find reference to the book.

It's supposed to be quite good according to whoever is quoted there.

My issue has to do with 12 year olds reading about people getting "corn holed." If it was my 12 year old, I'd want them to wait until high school. YMMV of course.

I mean... I roamed libraries when I was 12. My parents would take me there or drop me off and didn't give a rats ass what I brought home. Usually it was novels and comic books but again it wasn't like my parents were pre-reading the books I was bringing up, scouring every line for the appropriateness of content. I mean I remember reading RL stine books about people getting heads cutoff when I was 12.

This was one racy line in a book. Turn on the radio and listen to music. Any song by the weeknd. Despacito. A good parent would use it as a teaching opportunity for their own kids rather than raising a stink about some random line in a random book that the school wasn't even aware of or actively promoting.

It's true, there is no way to prevent every child every time from reading something you may think is inappropriate. Children vary in their motivation and degrees of access, and parents vary in their degrees of vigilance. This doesn't strike me as a good argument for why this particular book should be in a middle school library.

After all, 9 year olds can pretty easily access porn on the internet. Should we allow porn in grade school libraries?

They are reading and talking worse outside of school. If you think that isn't true, you are kidding yourself. What's important in is to know what your kids are reading, and have discussions about it. Sheltering them from reality is more harmful and invites them to learn the wrong lesson/message from someone else, which will invite bigger problems.

Middle school is not too young to be talking about this stuff, as middle school is ages 10 to 14. 11 is the average age girls start puberty. So 10 on is exactly the right time to start talking about this stuff, even if some of the topics are uncomfortable.

That title pulls multiple books on Amazon, wasn't sure which one it was. Didn't think a book about three 30s would say corn holed in it.

I'm personally much more concerned with books with racist undertones or pushing religious BS, both of which are prolific in libraries. For "corn holed" to mean anything to a kid they'd have to already know what anal was or look it up. A Google search doesn't bring up porn, either.

It doesn't appear the woman is objecting to sex being taught. IMO anal sex isn't an age appropriate topic for a 12 year old in schools.
