from: http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/student-clockmaker-ahmed-mohamed-will-move-qatar/

More than a month since Ahmed Mohamed was arrested for a homemade clock that was mistaken for a bomb, his family said Tuesday that the 14-year-old will soon leave for Qatar to resume his studies.

“After careful consideration of all the generous offers received, we would like to announce that we have accepted a kind offer from Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF) for Ahmed to join the prestigious QF Young Innovators Program, which reflects the organization’s on-going dedication to empowering young people and fostering a culture of innovation and creativity,” the family said in a statement released Tuesday.

The announcement came a day after the Texas student took up President Barack Obama’s personal invitation to visit the White House as part of “Astronomy Night.” The decision also followed weeks of Ahmed’s family considering different options for a new school, including a mini-tour to the Middle East earlier in October that brought Ahmed to the Qatar Foundation’s Education City campus in Doha, the country’s capital.

Anthony Bond, a family friend and founder of the NAACP chapter of Irving, Texas, told The Washington Post that a full scholarship awaits Ahmed at the Qatar Foundation when he, his parents and two sisters move next week. He added that the move was partly motivated by the online conspiracies that said Ahmed’s hoax bomb was a way to get attention.

“Everybody’s vilifying him, and he’s not a villain. He’s a 14-year-old boy,” Bond told the Post. “The whole world was concerned about this, and it’s impossible that anyone could have expected this international reaction.”

Dubbed the “clock kid,” Mohamed received a flood of support with the #IStandWithAhmed hashtag on Twitter that brought him national attention after his school thought his creation — a digital clock — was a hoax bomb. Although police didn’t ultimately charge Ahmed, he was suspended for three days.

Beyond Obama, supporters ranging from Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and Omar al-Bashir, the president of Sudan, reached out to Ahmed.

Before Monday’s “Astronomy Night” at the White House, Ahmed told the Associated Press what lesson could be learned from his experience: “Don’t judge a person by the way they look. Always judge them by their heart.”

Way to go Texas, alienate a talented mind when he is young. That boy could come up with awesome future inventions, but not for us.

1. You already have a thread about this here: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2448131 and his move is being discussed there.
2. Texas didn't make him go anywhere. At least take a stab at verisimilitude.

Well, the kid is black and a Muslim, so we can imagine how welcomed he is in red state Texas.

Besides, the kid wants to get an education and has to go to Qatar to get a better education than one he could ever receive in Texas.

Yeah, so talented that he could hoax the entire country and get our President's idiot media managers to tweet stupid shit before they knew they were being hoaxed. He could use a screwdriver and could take credit for somebody else's work while hoodwinking millions into calling people racist for no real reason.

He would have had a bright future in politics.

Nobody gave a shit about his religion, or color, or politics, until the left got ahold of the story and found out that a brown muslim had been arrested for a hoax bomb. The twitterhead universe exploded with twittering retweetering fuckery at 140 characters with nobody bothering to do any real research. The fuckery was turned into buttfuckery when our President's handlers found out they could make a quick buck on it and decided to be utterly moronic.

Kid's parents knew they had this country and decided to play up the "poor brown muslim wearing a nasa shirt that was an inventor the size of einstein", when, in fact, he didn't do fuck-all but create something that was *INTENDED* to draw a certain response.

Good riddance to bad rubbish. I hope they renounce their citizenship.

You betcha and you can't deny entry to US Citizens at any entry port so suck it.

But you can bomb them without trials and democrats won't complain about it because any victim of a drone strike is obviously a terrorist.

Teacher could have just said, Good job kid! And that would have been a total non story!

You know who tried to make this a story? The Right Wing looney bins who's reaction appalled the rest of the free thing world which doesn't have it's head up it's xenophobic ass.

He does seem fairly intelligent, considering how effectively he manipulated the circumstances and the media to his advantage. He must have known on some level it was going to cause big fireworks, though I doubt he imagined it getting as big as it did.

Actually, it seemed that the left tried to make this a big story that attempted to castigate the right in the process, but it backfired on them...badly.

Now this family has moved to Qatar. I'm not one for conspiracies, but sometimes one has to wonder.

Several teachers told him to put away his non-invention and the teacher who did respond at first did so by initially telling him to put it away.

It wasn't until he pushed for a reaction by plugging in this clock he disassembled into a wall socket to have it go off during class that the teacher decided something was off and informed school officials. And his sister admitted to being suspended at this same school over a alleged bomb threat 3 years prior.

She provides her account on the events that lead to her suspension over this bomb threat.

Also, WTF kind of father takes his son to go see a man wanted by the ICC for crimes??

On 14 July 2008, the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Luis Moreno Ocampo, alleged that al-Bashir bore individual criminal responsibility for genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes committed since 2003 in Darfur.[16] The prosecutor accused al-Bashir of having "masterminded and implemented" a plan to destroy the three main ethnic groups—Fur, Masalit, and Zaghawa—with a campaign of murder, rape, and deportation. The arrest warrant is supported by NATO, the Genocide Intervention Network, and Amnesty International.

He left? Good. There are enough social science-bound drama llamas in this country already.

What are you wondering about? How a kid and his family were so smart and cunning that they manipulated the world all so that their kid would get a free education ride in FUCKING QATAR of all countries?!

Yeah sometimes I wonder as well, except I wonder how you idiots manage to still be alive.
