Ha! A little ice on the ground and my University has shut down for the day. Only in Texas. Sucks for my wife because she works in a hospital and they never shut down.

I go to UTD in Richardson. The only effect having class cancelled for me was that I now have more time to study :( I think I took too many hours this semester :)

That stupid thunder and lightning in Houston kept me from getting sleep last night. :(

<-- Afraid of thunder and lightning.

texas is full of wusses. At Western IL, its like this: "30 feet of snow? Good excercise as you go to class." "Fall and break you legs on the ice? Well, work your arms out by pulling yourself to class."

Silly texans

Why when I was a boy, I had to walk ten miles in the ice, without shoes mind you, just to get to school. And if I was late, I had to stand outside naked in the snow as punishment!

Hold on a second. Im home right now because there is about 1 inch of ice outside my door. My rear wheel drive, light weight Miata with worn tires isnt going to cut it out there.

There is good reason for this.

I felt that way too for a long time as a transplanted North Dakotan...

Texas has very few snowplows, why not just let the state shut down 1 or 2 days, rather than invest millions in snow removal equipment used once or twice a year. Besides, they'd scrape up all those reflectors & lane seperators they're forced to use because of all the moron drivers down here.

The precipitation in TX is usually sleet anyway, accidents are caused by slick conditions, they have a good supply of sanding trucks, even though they're used only a couple of times a year.

First snow of the season up North, there's lots of accidents because people forget to increase stopping distances. I can't even begin to count the 4X4's I've seen crashed up here in the ice & snow because their drivers think they can stop fast, swerve better because of the 4WD...

You're lucky if the fool passing you has all season radials, they just don't buy/sell them here, studded snow tires are illegal here.

I just gave up, & huddle next to the fireplace when bad weather hit, just not worth it to get slammed into by a fool in an Explorer @ 60 mph on the interstates (& the next 18 cars following them).

[pliablemoose's inclement Texas weather rant mode off/]

Yup. Our business opens in half an hour. Going to make an attempt in a little while. Too bad we live on a hill.

I think it's good when major metro areas shut down during storms - even small ones. Most people don't have trouble getting around in a little snow or ice. However, there's always one fool that thinks they can drive at normal speed limits that will ruin the party. Places close down for safety reasons, which is a good thing.

Were having classes today... but theres no ice here, just some rain and temps of 34 degrees. so unless it drops a few more were not going to see any ice.

Same with my 240sx. I will admit that I DO NOT KNOW how to drive on ice. I'm going to nef instead of put my life and others' lives in danger.
